Exterior Overview
This diesel Hilux Surf is a top tier performer. Its a 4×4 with an optional center locker, and the 1KZ-TE powerplant has a legendary reputation for durability. This 1997 is also a looker, finished in a fresh coat of Bucharest Black. Aside from a few small imperfections, the body is in good shape, and this SSR-X is set off by 16″ Deerfield DP alloys, a stylish rear spoiler, OEM rear spare tire swingarm, and OEM rainguards. Fresh off a recent service in our shop, this dependable rig is offered with only 124k verified and documented miles on the clock. Interior Overview
The interior is in good nick and is equipped with a bevy of features. Safety items, such as standard dual SRS airbags, were also integrated into the third-generation platform design. Additionally, this KZN185 has a drop-down reverse mirror that unfurls from the spoiler with the press of a button so that the driver can see what’s hiding behind the vehicle when reversing. The driver can get comfortable behind the wheel thanks to a tilt adjustable steering column and these optional seats include a driver lumbar adjustment. The upholstery, with its stylized confetti pattern, is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The cloth is also mirrored in the door cards, and ties in nicely. The headliner is tidy and held taut to the roof. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and the center stack includes functional USDM Boss Bluetooth audio and a simple-to-use auto climate control system. Cold A/C and piping hot heat can be funneled through the cabin and the power windows and rear glass can retract for more natural ventilation. Power locks and mirrors make daily use more enjoyable, and this Surf was obviously cared for in a prior life. We have even included the original owner’s manuals! Aside from the driver mirror no longer power folding, some tiny holes from a nav mount located on the center stack trim, and some light carpet stains, it’s hard to complain about the interior.
Mechanical Overview
The powerplant is one of our favorites, and has a proven track record to boast about. The 1KZ-TE under the bonnet makes impressive power, and is frugal on fuel, too. The 3.0L churns to life care of a new 12v battery and runs seamlessly thanks to a set of new accessory belts. With all of our turbodisel inventory, we always change out the fuel filter, and perform an oil and filter service for good measure. The four-banger is mated to a trusty automatic gearbox that feeds power through a selective transfercase. For the best fuel efficiency and power, RWD is the ticket, however, if the weather gets rough, 4WD can be engaged on the fly. Even better, this example is equipped with the optional center locking differential. The fluid was replaced in the rear differential with new lubricant, to keep the driveline happy. With such a robust 4×4 system, it’s no wonder these rigs go just about anywhere. On the tarmac, the revised rear multilink pays dividends. We refreshed the suspension with new rear shocks, which deliver a more premium ride. New rear sway bar end links, new front sway bar bushings and links were all installed for Virginia state safety inspection. Lastly, one of our trained techs also rebuilt the steering rack and reinstalled it with new bushings. A fresh alignment guarantees that this truck goes right where you point it, and that the meaty 31″ Goodyears should last for a good long while to come. The Surf accelerates nicely and stops just as well, equipped with new front pads and rotors. Turn key and ready to hit the road, this KZN185 is a winner!
