The previously-forbidden Evolution IV is a responsive pocket rocket and this 1996 GSR is as good as it gets with 61k verified miles on the ticker.

Exterior Overview

The Lancer Evolution is the textbook definition of a true road going rally car. Similar in stature to the late-model domestic Evos offered here in the states, the previously-forbidden Evolution IV is a responsive pocket rocket and this 1996 GSR is as good as it gets, with 61k verified miles on the ticker. Finished in Pyreness Black Pearl (X08) and set off by all the standard rally accoutrements, this Lancer Evo stands out with a factory front lip, oversized fog lamps and an imposing rear spoiler. It also assumes a mean stance, thanks to 17″ Enkei RPF1 wheels and new Fortune Auto coilovers. Save for a few minor paint imperfections, this Mitsu is in above average condition overall, which only aids its collectibility. For unmatched performance on or off the tarmac, and styling sure to turn heads at your weekend cars and coffee, this Lancer Evo is a cherry Japanese Classic!

Interior Overview

We love the IV for its drivability, but the Recaro interior is quite the talking point too! All original down to the striking patterned upholstery, the factory materials show well after 27 years of use and only some minor bolster wear is present if we had to nitpick. The dash materials are also in good nick, and a few additional meters have been added to keep an eye on engine vitals. The Defi ZD display provides on-demand info on temperature and pressure, and a Defi boost gauge is affixed to the a-pillar to monitor the snail under the hood. The center stack also boasts an easy to use digital automatic climate control system, and upgraded Pioneer audio with Bluetooth functionality. For seasonal use, cold A/C and hot heat work at the push of a button and assist daily use. The rear seats can comfortably fit an extra passenger or two, and the rest of the materials are in good shape, from the matching cloth inserts in the door cards to the headliner and factory carpet. Dual SRS airbags are on hand in case of any on-road emergencies, and to sweeten the deal we retained the factory owner’s manual and a bunch of useful literature for the aftermarket components too!

Mechanical Overview

This IV employs some incredible technology that was groundbreaking at the time, and overall drivability is second to none. The 4G63 under the bonnet boasts a twin scroll turbo allowing the 2.0L to build boost quickly, despite its economical displacement. The legendary four-banger starts up promptly and the powerplant is fresh off an oil and filter service. New spark plugs were chucked in and this inline 4 packs a punch! The exhaust note is slightly more aggressive than stock, and the engine packs a few more ponies thanks to a Monster Sport downpipe and SARD high flow catalytic converter. A polished FGK catback sounds great under throttle and a Monster Sport intake contributes to the 4G symphony. The 5 speed gearbox is responsive and direct, and geared primarily for speedy jaunts about town. Custom valved Cygnus Performance dampers assist handling in the twisties, and upgraded whiteline swaybars and Cusco engine mounts eliminate any unwanted slack in the drivetrain. Additionally, the Enkei wheels are wrapped in nearly new Potenza rubber. The braking performance is top-tier as you might expect and the steering is communicative and on point. We have to hand it to Mitsubishi, this car is better than expected and drives like a million bucks, even twenty-seven years after it rolled out of the factory.
