This spritely Pajero looks mean, drives like a new sport-utility, and is bolstered by one of the best 4WD systems to ever come out of the motherland. Better yet, the GDI V6 under the hood was freshly revised for the 1997 model year and has more get up and go than pretty much any other Japanese SUV of the time. Our 97 ZR is a compact classic and is finished in Satellite Silver (A69). Sporting a scooped hood borrowed from a turbodiesel model, factory wide bodywork, and shaved front and rear bumpers, this 2 door looks the part and is accented by OEM rainguards, an optional sunroof visor and a set of fitting D-Windows. Save for some minor stone chips, dings, and exposed metal supports where the bumper covers once resided, this SUV is in good condition inside and out. It's also traveled a mere 84k miles over the past couple of decades and was clearly taken care of by its prior owner overseas. A budget-friendly example of Mitsubishi's Dakar legend, there's no Japanese Classic quite like this Pajero.

The interior is surprisingly spacious for a 2-door SUV and was clearly cared for over the past couple of decades. Finished in a durable patterned grey cloth, the upholstery shows well, with no discernible damage to the fabric outside of some driver's bolster wear. The dash is in great shape and houses dual SRS airbags, a feature newly available for 97. The gray vinyl-trimmed dashboard shows well, with no cracking, peeling, or serious UV damage to note. The lower dash frames a fully functional digital automatic climate control unit, which is an upgrade over prior iterations of the truck. Not only does the A/C blow cold, but hot heat is also on the ready for anyone looking to turn this Pajero into a certified winter warrior. While the factory audio system was removed, US replacement audio option is an easy swap should you choose to soundtrack your drive and a factory field monitor rests atop the dash and functions properly. For those looking for a daily driven rig, this one is a good fit, and power windows, mirrors, and power locks work at the push of a button. There's even a power retractable moonroof that slides open without a hitch! The rear seats, while compact, offer ample space for two additional passengers, but they can also be folded forward to maximize any needed cargo space in the rear. Overall, the condition on this rig is impressive. Aside from some typical wear to the touch points, it should suit future occupants well. We've even kept the original toolkit and owner's manual handy for the eager next owner!

Under the hood the 3500 V6 is a whole lot of motor for this chassis and is a welcome upgrade from generations prior. Equipped with GDI technology, this is one quick 6 pot and ours is fresh off a recent service by our trained technicians. She cranks over swiftly, care of a freshly installed 12v battery, and quickly settles into a smooth idle. A fresh oil and filter service was performed to ensure you won't sweat a drop of lubricant. Fresh spark plugs across the board keep this one idling and accelerating smoothly, and under full throttle this little two-door hauler is a riot! Shifts through the automatic transmission are smooth, and a selectable manual mode works quite well if you want some extra control over the gear changes. Mated to the trans is Mitsubishi's world class SS4WD system, allowing you to adjust your drive wheels at speed, and the selector works without a hitch. If the going gets tough, a center locker can be engaged, as well. The suspension is plenty agile and glides over bumps with ease, and we've even installed new brake pads in the rear which should stop this rig abruptly in any sticky situations with the assistance of factory ABS. You definitely feel the rally heritage in this Pajero as you dart around on and off-road obstacles, but the power steering is light and on point for daily driving as well. Lastly we've even mounted and balanced new Falken A/T tires at all four corners to keep road noise down and grip strong for tens of thousands of miles to come!
