Exterior Overview
The Hilux Surf is a determined midsize SUV. Its nearly unkillable diesel engine and beefy body on frame platform are legendary, and this 1997 is one killer rig. Finished in a Toyota Black (202) this SSR-X is set off by refinished 16″ aftermarket alloys, a desirable OEM spare tire swingarm, an aggressive rear factory spoiler, oversized yellow fog lamps, and a blacked-out OEM brushguard. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the paint is in fine shape and this turn-key 4×4 is fresh off a recent service. Offered with a minuscule 121k verified and documented miles on the clock, this KZN185 has tons of life left in it. Efficient, reliable, and a top performer, this fun-to-drive Surf does just about everything well. This versatile Japanese Classic can be yours today and is ideal as a year-round daily driver, fun family transporter, or beach cruising adventure mobile!
Interior Overview
The cabin is spacious and nicely equipped. For those who may value safety, ABS is standard as are the dash-mounted dual SRS airbags. The dashboard itself lacks any craking or distortion and the center stack is close by and within arms reach. A neat little factory upgrade is the headunit, which works like a charm and has an integrated TV! The automatic climate control system above is simple to operate and sends cold A/C or piping hot heat through the cabin when called upon. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and optional adjustable lumbar support. Power locks, mirrors, and windows all function, making daily use more enjoyable. The seats are in good shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear occupants’ seat backs four-way recline for optimal comfort, unlike our domestic 4Runners which were sold absent that feature. Other cool options include a power backup mirror which unfurls from the rear spoiler. It allows the driver to see the rear bumper when reversing to park, saving a costly insurance claim. When additional cargo needs are required. The rear seats fold flat into the floor and the rear window glass can be rolled down to fit in a couple of lengthy 2x4s. The headliner and door cards are in good shape and the carpets are in good nick. Aside from a driver seat bottom repair and the power folding function of side mirrors giving up the ghost, there is little to complain about!
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this Hilux is a mean machine. For those concerned about rust, this might be the nicest frame condition we have seen in the past three years. It looks about as good as they get! The engine is durable, powerful, and inexpensive to service. Known for its bulletproof nature our 1KZ-TE is fresh off an oil and filter service in our shop. So that power and fuel economy are maximized a new engine air filter and new fuel filter were replaced first thing. The crossover tube had a light crack so we replaced it with an OEM unit, as well. With the twist of the key, bolstered by a new 12v battery, the 3.0L churns to life. The electronics will remain properly powered thanks to a new set of serpentine belts which work to keep under hood squeals and screeches to a minimum. So that the new owner can hit the road for an immediate trip, we upgraded the cooling system with a new aluminum radiator and performed a coolant flush for good measure. The valve cover gasket had a noticeable leak so we replaced that too, and added in the half-moon seals for added peace of mind. The four banger is linked to an automatic gearbox which mates well with the gobs of low-end torque produced by this mill. For the best MPG and acceleration, RWD is the ticket, but when rough weather comes your way, 4WD can be engaged with the press of a button on the fly. For loose surfaces like sand and snow, an upgraded OEM center locking differential and low-range 4WD will keep the momentum moving forward. Sustained highway use is comfortable and the long wheelbase distributes road imperfections nicely. We refreshed the suspension with new front and rear shocks, front lower control arms, new front lower ball joints, and replaced the inner and outer tie rods. For state inspection, a right front axle seal was installed and we replaced the front swaybar links. The truck drives straight as an arrow thanks to a fresh alignment and the new 31″ Falken tires should last for tens of thousands of miles to come. The ABS brakes are ideal for those living is snowy climates and they bite down aggressively care of new front brake rotors and pads. The power steering is light and easy to articulate and we have fully rebuilt the rack. Turn key and ready to rock, this Surf would be a wonderful daily driver, cool campsite cruiser, or fun weekend family hauler.
