Exterior Overview
Here in the states, we’re in the midst of a classic van renaissance, and imports like this 1997 HiAce are leading the pack in more ways than one. They’re efficient, spacious, and a true swiss army knife of a van. Practical and affordable, this hauler is perfect for weekend campouts to cross country road trips. That’s all thanks to the engineers at Toyota, who packed these vans with robust turbodiesel drivetrains, and the styling is lovable too. Finished in Oyster Pearl/Topaz (2AX), this van is set off by OEM rainguards, a stylish rear lollipop mirror, and some wide 6-spoke alloys. Save for a few cosmetic imperfections the exterior is no worse for the wear and, and we also wanted to note the left rear quarter panel was replaced in Japan. Still, the 89k miles on the ticker are verified, documented, and do a lot to make this Super Custom Limited a hot prospect in the van market. One of our favorite haulers, this HiAce gets tons of looks and is extraordinarily capable to boot. This is one Japanese Classic that stands out both on and off the beaten path!
Interior Overview
The interior is versatile and suits the driver well in most daily use situations. There are a lot of talking points, too, and both drivers and passengers alike champion the HiAce for its three rows of unique seating. For a quick snooze or road trip refresh, all three rows fold fully flat and create a sleeping surface. For unmatched comfort and camaraderie, the middle row can swivel 180 degrees to face the rear, and dual zone climate controls are close by to dial in cold A/C and hot heat at will. The upholstery is also in good nick and plush to the touch. Up front, the driver gains a few notable amenities. A power seat and a telescoping steering column keeps things comfortable behind the wheel. You also gain control over the tunes, thanks to Boss Bluetooth audio and both you and your passenger get dual SRS airbags up front for good measure. Both power windows up front are operable, as are the locks and electric side mirrors. For natural ventilation, you can pop open the back windows to let in a cool breeze and unfurl a suite of three moonroofs, with the rear two powering open to the heavens above. The headliner is tidy and the carpets beneath are protected by some sleek factory mats. The digital cluster reads clearly and accurately, and aside from a steering column that no longer power tilts and an inoperable folding passenger mirror, there is little to complain about as a whole.
Mechanical Overview
The drivetrain on this HiAce is as good as it gets. You could take our word for it, or scour forums and Facebook groups for owner reviews. We’ve also serviced the van here at our facility, and our trained technicians have given it the green light for the road ahead. A new 12v battery was installed, and an oil and filter service was performed to get you on track for the road ahead. From there, we installed a new valve cover gasket to keep any of your lubricant from going external, and a fuel filter was dropped in to keep any contaminants out of the diesel. With a peppy demeanor on the road, this HiAce is easy to jet up to highway speeds, and an automatic gearbox throws the power to a fulltime 4WD system with haste. To shore up the driveline, new axle seals were installed in the rear, and both front and rear swaybar link bushings keep this cabover chassis planted on the road. New rear shocks deliver a comfortable ride, and this van now starts, steers, and stops how you want it to. Chock full of tread, we wrapped the alloys in fresh Falken rubber, which is stylish and should keep you planted for tens of thousands of miles to come!
