With so many great Hilux Surf options on our lot, it's easy to be picky about options, condition, and mileage. Luckily this 1997 KZN185 ticks all those boxes, and sports a desirable factory touring package with a Recaro interior to boot! Finished in Desert Dune Metallic (1A5), the paint is in good nick overall and shows only a few light chips and hairline scratches from decades of day-to-day use. Sporting an OEM optional rear spoiler, Thule crossbars, a sought-after OEM swingarm, and hard spare tire cover, the exterior is in good nick. OEM rainguards and refinished factory alloys do a lot to tie the aesthetic together even more so. Racking up a scant 110k verified/documented miles over the years, this intercooled bad boy is barely broken in and is a worthwhile investment for any 4Runner junkie, diesel enthusiast, or Toyota die-hard! Capable, comfortable, and almost too cool for words, this is one awesome Japanese Classic truck!
The interior does all the talking and the bespoke Recaro upholstery is as eye-catching as it is functional. In above-average shape overall, the materials have resisted any serious rips or stains, and the upholstery is clean and tidy from the door card inserts to the headliner and carpets below. Complementing the textured black and grey upholstery, the sweeping vinyl dash lacks any of the typical cracks, fading, or unwanted distortion and houses a passenger airbag up front for those who prioritize on-road safety. The driver receives a DBA wood grain wheel that classes up the cabin! Further aiding driver comfort, the steering column can be tilted at will and additional lumbar support is at the ready for longer highway treks. The center stack frames factory Radio/TV, and automatic climate control works like a charm, spewing out piping hot heat for the winter ahead and some cold A/C for summers to come. A factory field monitor rests atop the windscreen and displays a bevy of useful outdoor information. Additional power equipment includes windows, locks, and power-folding mirrors, all of which work as advertised. The rear glass even powers down to maximize the flow of natural ventilation, or to serve as an exit for any doggy drool. The rear bench folds flat to maximize cargo space, and the seat back reclines slightly should your passengers need to catch a quick snooze. The headliner and carpets are both in good nick and overall it is clear to see this Surf was cared for in a prior life overseas.
The intercooled 1KZ-TE under the bonnet of this stellar surf is the last piece of the puzzle, and earns high marks for its near-bulletproof reliability, fuel economy, and robust torque curve. Like every rig we get in, a comprehensive service was performed by our trained technicians and this one drives even better than it looks! Two new batteries were installed to aid ignition, and we also replaced the engine air filter and diesel fuel filter. After a fresh oil and filter service and a replacement of the valve cover gasket, she was ready to hit the road and this N185 drives just about as great as it looks! The turbodiesel pays dividends when jetting from light to light around town and the automatic transmission is nicely geared for highway excursions as well. Enthusiasts commend the factory top mount intercooler for lowering exhaust gas temperatures, and we replaced all serpentine belts across the board to aid the turnkey experience. The factory adjustable dampers insulate the cabin nicely, even under harsher road conditions, and a selective transfer case can deploy 4WD if you run into a blizzard. Entrenched in a loose surface? Engage the center locking differential for some extra assistance if the going gets tough. The power steering has just received a flush and is power-assisted and easy to articulate. Parking is a snap thanks to this truck's tidy exterior dimensions and the driver can drop down a reverse mirror from the spoiler to see the car parked behind them. The ABS brakes do a swell job at stopping this Surf on a dime, and we wrapped the factory alloys in beefy 31" Falken All Terrains. Better yet, we even performed a fresh alignment to help this truck drive straight as an arrow and prolong the life of the fresh rubber!
