Stock #5986Toyota is a brand that can build a darn good sports utility vehicle. By the time this 1997 Surf came out, they had four decades of off-road experience and were designing some of the most reliable and capable trucks on the planet. This SSR-X is a wonderful example, and looks all business in its one-off Darkside Black, and is set off by a 2" lift, refinished gloss black 16" factory wheels shod with 33" Falken A/T's, OEM rainguards, and some menacing privacy tint. The body has a few character marks, such as a few scuffs, dings, and chips, but this 141k verified and documented mileage example is in good nick overall. Boasting a nearly bulletproof 1KZ-TE turbodiesel, this recently serviced torque monster is barely broken in and would make for an efficient year-round transporter, fun weekend escape vehicle, and just about anything in between. Well-rounded, civil, safe, and well-equipped this Japanese Classic might be the best midsize SUV to come from the island of the rising sun! The cabin has a simple layout and includes a few upgrades and power amenities that may surprise you. The tall ride height lends itself to better-than-average forward visibility and the dashboard houses a passenger SRS airbag. The gray vinyl lacks any cracking or fading and automatic climate control and an upgraded Protone headunit are mounted in the center stack. Both work, with the latter providing a clear crisp sound, auxiliary inputs and a touchscreen. It should be noted the volume button is missing, however. The other upgrade is classy woodgrain Nardi steering wheel which is mounted on a tilt adjustable steering column. The driver even gets a manual lumbar adjustment so that they can find the ideal driving position. To further supplement daily use, power windows, door locks and electric mirrors are on hand and function like they should. Even the rear glass powers down to provide a light breeze and can provide your furry friend a safe view out the back of the Hilux. The seats are upholstered in good shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. That's not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note some light scratches on some of the plastics in the cargo area and a few light stains on the headliner and carpet. On the positive side, the door cards are in great shape and even the OEM owners manual is included in the sale! When you talk about all-time great JDM diesel engines, the 1KZ-TE will likely come up in conversation. What it lacks in refinement it more than makes up for in power, frugality, and determination. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L churns to life care of a new 12v battery. To ensure it runs seamlessly, one of our trained techs replaced the cracked intake boot with a new one, and replaced the old leaking valve cover. Some preventive maintenance is never a bad idea, and so we switched out the fuel filter, air filter, and serpentine belts for new units. The 2982cc mill is linked to slick-shifting automatic that makes good use of this engine's prodigious low-end power. Throttling from stoplight to stoplight is a fun affair and this cruiser is comfortable at higher interstate speeds, too. For those with an upcoming off-road excursion planned, rest assured the 4WD system is on point! Not only is low-range 4WD available but the optional center locker was spec'd from the factory. That means that sand, sleet, and snow will be easy to fend off in this bad boy! The suspension is predictable and offers loads of ground clearance should you need it. The power steering is light and easy to articulate and the standard ABS brakes are more than capable. The fresh rubber at all four corners reduces the road noise greatly and will provide tens of thousands of miles of grip for a long while to come. *California Residents: In order to register a Grey Market vehicle in the state of California then it will have to be made CARB compliant first.
