The Hilux Surf is an honest SUV. Beloved for its ability to traverse tough terrain, this 4WD features the same drivetrain as our Stateside 4Runner, making parts procurement and service options as easy as it gets. This 1997 is also reliable and well-optioned and would be an ideal platform that is turn-key ready for year-round daily use. Finished in a stately Desert Dune Metallic (1A5) this SSR-G is adorned with a stylish rear spoiler, OEM rainguards, optional front valence, and refinished OEM alloys wrapped in new Yokohama Geolanders. Aside from a few light scuffs, chips, and dings the body is in good nick and this rig is fresh off a recent service. Having logged a fraction of the clicks of an American example, this truck is offered with a mere 121k verified and documented miles on the odometer. Tough, collectible, and affordable to purchase, this legendary, class-leading Japanese Classic SUV is a killer value and won't stay around here for long!
This cabin is spacious, and nicely optioned. Standard dual SRS front airbags add some peace of mind, and the driver has a commanding view of the road ahead. Located by the map light a trick OEM field monitor displays information such as direction of travel and barometric pressure in case you go off the grid. The pilot receives a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. The dash is in good shape aside from a blemish on the center of the dash from a Japanese nav mount, and the center stack is close by and at hand. Controls for the auto climate system are easy to use and the system can mix heat and cold A/C based on your preference. Below is a touchscreen Panasonic head unit that modernized the cabin a fair amount. The seats are in fair shape and lack any major rips, stains or tears. The rear bench can 4 way recline and also tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. Power windows, power-folding mirrors, and electric side and rear glass are all functional and make daily use more enjoyable. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have withstood the past quarter century without sustaining major abuse and overall it's clear this truck was cared for overseas.
The frame, running gear, and driveline are shared with US 4Runner so servicing is as easy as any import model we bring in. The 5VZ-FE under the hood is a stout unit, with American examples eclipsing half a million miles with regularity. This V6 churns to life care of a new 12v battery and is fresh off an oil service. A new fuel filter, new spark plugs, and spark plug wires were installed to guarantee the fuel is combusted properly. One of our trained techs has replaced the valve cover gaskets and the half-moon seals to ensure that this 3400 stays topped up on oil. Connected to a stout automatic, this Hilux is capable of getting up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat and is peppy about town. The gearbox shifts properly and sends power through a selective transfer case. For even more traction the driver can switch to 4WD on the fly and a low range steering is also available. Beachgoers and trail junkies alike will love the center locker that was spec'd on this Surf too, an option not available on the US 4runner. The ride quality is above average and we have refreshed this N185 with new rear shocks, and new rear upper and lower control arms. The ABS brakes received some upgrades, too, in the form of new front brake pads and rotors. New sway bar links were installed, and the power steering is light yet communicative for a truck. Grip is handled by a freshly mounted and balanced Yokohama rubber at each corner. The tires quiet down the ride and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
