Our Hilux Surf's makes domestic 4Runner's for sale here in the U.S. look pretty basic and downmarket. You see, the Japanese market included many more options on this platform, and this 1997 demonstrates that perfectly! This 1997 is a stunner, with its factory optional translucent hood deflector, sunroof visor, rare rear translucent OEM spoiler, and sporty 16" Topy BAZALT Bazaruto 16" alloys. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the Emerald Green Pearl (751) paint is in good nick and this rig is fresh off recent service. Having logged only 113k verified and documented miles, the 1KZ-TE turbo diesel under the hood is barely broken in, and this SSR-X is turn key ready to roll off the lot. Handsome, capable, and a top-tier performer, this Japanese Classic SUV leaves little to be desired and would make for an ideal daily driver or cool campsite companion.
The cabin is in good shape overall, and includes several options and upgrades. The center stack has been updated with a more modern Eclipse headunit that delivers good sound to the factory speakers! Directly above are the automatic climate controls that are intuitive to operate. Cold A/C and piping hot heat can be mixed through the cabin and if more natural ventilation is your thing, the rear and side glass powers down and the sunroof rolls back and tilts properly. The dashboard is in good shape and the driver and passenger both benefit from dual SRS airbags. Located by the map lights, an OEM field monitor displays information on the exterior conditions to those within the cabin. Other electric niceties include power locks, keyless entry, and electric mirrors, which make daily use more enjoyable. The upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The driver seat does have some compressed foam on the bottom and a few tiny holes, but the seat was produced in the middle of the Clinton administration, so a little wear is to be expected. The middle row can tumble forward to create a fully flat surface when additional cargo space is desired and it also four-way reclines. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are in fair shape and have withstood the past twenty-five years without sustaining major abuse. Even the owner's manuals are included for the new owner and are resting in the sizable glove box.
The platform was designed to handle lots of use and abuse. The body on frame underpinnings are tough, but the truck doesn't beat you up and is comfortable on pavement and even more than capable off the beaten path. This KZN185 is powered by the legendary 1KZ-TE, which is fresh off a recent oil and filter service. It whirrs to life care of two new 12v batteries. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter work to maximize performance and economy and one of our trained techs replaced the valve cover gasket while it was up on the lift. Power is fed through an automatic gearbox, and the driver can switch between two and four-wheel drive on the fly. For low traction situations, a center locker and low range can be enabled, allowing for momentum to keep moving forward! The lifted suspension is predictable and has received a heavy refresh. New rear shocks and new rear upper and lower trailing arms were installed when it was in the shop. Able to handle the rigors of daily use and abuse this platform feels at home on the highway and on rutty backroads alike. The ABS brakes feel confident and the power steering is light and on point. The 16"s are wrapped in new 33" Falken rubber to complete the package, and this turn-key rig is ready to roll!
