As far as rad JDM SUVs go it doesn't get much better than this 1996 Toyota Land Cruiser. Finished in a one-off Firestorm Orange, this Prado gets more looks than most anything we retail. The paint and body are in good shape overall, with only a few minor imperfections to note. Offered with only 127k verified and documented miles, the 3" lift, black powder-coated wheels with new 33"s, OEM rainguards, and smoked tail lights only add more to this example's appeal. It doesn't hurt that this reliable and capable turbodiesel 4x4 can be used year-round, and is just as good on the tarmac as it is off the beaten path. Boasting plenty of upgrades, this J78 doesn't just look mean, it has the stones to back it up. For the Toyota enthusiast who wants a spacious cabin, eye-catching aesthetics, and a nearly bulletproof driveline, this rig is the perfect Japanese Classic and is as breathtaking as it gets!
The cabin is well-appointed, spacious, and includes several upgrades. The big touch screen Pioneer head unit and fitted leather seat covers modernize the cockpit and deliver a more upscale feel. The radio is simple to use and works flawlessly, and the sound quality isn't half bad. Electric windows, locks, and a tilt steering column make daily use enjoyable, and this Prado also includes functional A/C and heat. If you prefer more natural ventilation, an electric tilting and retracting sunroof is on hand. The headliner and carpets have withstood major abuse over the years and are in good nick overall. That's not to say the interior is perfect as we wanted to note two light dash cracks, some light UV damage to the door cards, and that the passenger mirror no longer power adjusts. Still, at 25 years of age, this truck is in wonderful shape and was cared for overseas.
The mechanicals are simple and sturdy and that's why so many of these have stood the test of time. This LC is powered by the legendary 1KZ-TE, which is fresh off an oil and filter service. The 3.0L cranks to life care of two new 12v batteries and a new set of serpentine belts keep the accessories running like a top. The four-cylinder is connected to a selective transfer case and automatic transmission. Despite the heavy curb weight, the combination of the slick-shifting gearbox and torquey inline-four work well together, and the driver never has to worry about passing power or getting up to safe highway merging speeds. For the more adventurous, a low 4WD gear setting is on hand and the hubs can be electronically locked from inside the cabin. When out on a muddy trail or playing in the snow, these items pay serious dividends. New front pads have been installed and the front rotors have been resurfaced, ensuring this big girl can stop with confidence. To complete the list of maintenance, new 33" Falken all-terrain tires were added at all four corners to the black, powder-coated wheels. The new rubber will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and suit this Prado EX quite well!
