Exterior Overview
The offroad community is now dominated by massive, heavy, plodding SUVs. For enthusiasts, it’s a pretty depressing thing, as most 4WD vehicles nowadays are bloated, and designed for passenger hauling instead of use on the beach or trailhead. This 1996 Suzuki is a refreshing change of pace, with its light curb weight and simple yet robust underpinnings. Finished in a classic Polar White, this Jimny is set off by OEM rainguards, an aftermarket rear bumper, a polished gas tank skid plate, a chrome fuel door, and 16″ alloys. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the body is in good shape and this 4×4 is fresh off a recent service. Proving that big things come in small packages, this Japanese Classic could be your ideal city runabout, campsite playtoy, and just about anything in between!
Interior Overview
When you’re a driver or passenger this Jimny feels like a regular vehicle. You sit above traffic, and the Suzuki offers a commanding view of the road ahead. A sporty MoMo Prototipo wheel adds to the aesthetic and feels good in the palms of your hands. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and the center stack is close by and easy to reach. A simple-to-use climate system features cold A/C and piping hot heat for year-round use. Head and shoulder room are decent and a sizable glovebox and cubby below offer solutions for your storage needs. The black and gray cloth seats are in good condition. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and have been cared for overseas. The rear seatbacks fold down when more cargo room is required, and they also fold up against the D-Pillar for more clearance. The headliner and door cards are in above-average shape and the carpets have resisted major abuse over the years. There is even a Pioneer radio upgrade to supply tunes through the cockpit!
Mechanical Overview
This body on frame ruffian is powered by the G13b four-cylinder. Sold here in the States parts are easy to find and are inexpensive for this gasser. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 1.3L springs to life care of a new 12v battery. A new engine air filter works to maximize performance and fuel economy. The motor feels strong and pulls hard all the way to redline. We did want to note that we couldn’t verify the odometer shows actual mileage, but the mechanicals are all in good nick overall. One of our trained techs has done a nice job rehabbing the powertrain. The engine’s oil pan was resealed as was the transmission pan. The automatic shifts properly and feeds power through a selectable transfercase. The pilot can select 2WD for the best acceleration and fuel economy, but when ice, sand, and snow stand in this Jimny’s way, 4WD is ready to assist. When maximum grip is needed to plow through some loose surfaces, low-range gearing can be engaged, too. To ensure the power gets translated to the ground effectively, we have rebuilt the front left hub. New right front and rear wheel bearings were also installed so that this special Suzuki passes through its Virginia safety inspection. The suspension has been refurbished with four new KYB gas shocks at each corner. They sort out the ride much better than the stock suspension and are built to withstand loads of abuse. The brakes slow this tiny runabout down quickly and we have performed a fresh brake fluid flush to remove any water from the system. The steering is direct and on point and the wheels are wrapped in brand new all-terrain rubber at each corner. Freshly aligned, they will last for tens of thousands of miles to come, and reduce road noise greatly. Turn key and ready to rock, this Suzuki is a fun, affordable and unique little Japanese Classic!
