The Hilux Surf is a jack of all trades, and it's hard to find fault with this model, as it lacks many shortcomings. This 1996 is powered by the legendary 3.0L turbodiesel and is underpinned by a surefooted 4WD system. Finished in a classic Desert Dune Metallic (1A5), this rig is set off by 16" anthracite alloys, EGR rainguards, a rear OEM spare tire swingarm, and a factory bashbar. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in good shape and this five-seater is fresh off a recent service. At only 175k verified and documented miles, this baby is barely broken in, and the turn key is ready to roll. Efficient, powerful, and inexpensive to maintain, this SSR-X is a capable Japanese Classic that can be put to task year round!

The cabin is spacious, simple, and includes plenty of amenities. Press the keyless entry fob and the doors unlock with haste. Thanks to the tall ride height, the driver can slide into the cabin and is greeted by a tilt-adjustable steering column and manual lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. The view ahead is clear and unobstructed and the dashboard lacks any cracking or fading. Dual SRS airbags are mounted up front for some added peace of mind and the audio and climate controls are easy to access and located in the center stack. The A/C and heat function properly as does the Eclipse touchscreen head unit upgrade. The seats are trimmed in a durable Moon Mist colored cloth. The upholstery lacks any major rips stains or tears and compliments the exterior hue. The middle row 4-way reclines and tumbles forward to create an expansive cargo area and flat loading floor. Power windows, electric rear glass, electric door locks, and power mirrors all make daily use enjoyable and they function in typical Toyota fashion. Even the rear glass powers down to provide an additional breeze. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have all withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse and even the owner's manuals are included in the purchase.

Under the skin, this wonderful vehicle shares a frame and running gear with our domestic 4Runners. The 1KZ-TE under the bonnet is fresh off an oil and filter service and churns to life care of two new 12v batteries. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter keeps the 1K happy and it pulls hard to redline. For those in the know, one of the most important preventative maintenance items on a 25-year-old Toyota is a rebuild of the ECU. This professionally performed service includes a transferrable lifetime warranty the unit allows the powertrain to properly function. Acceleration is impressive for a 25-year-old SUV and power is fed through a sturdy automatic gearbox. For those in snowy and rainy climates, 4WD can be engaged on the fly and an optional center locker can be utilized, too. The suspension offers plenty of ground clearance and is connected and predictable and features brand new front shocks. The ABS brake feel confident and the power steering is light but on point. New 31" Falken tires are mounted at each corner, quieting down the road noise. They will last for tens of thousands of miles to come of year-round grip to come.
