The Legacy wagon was an incredibly popular vehicle here in the US, although it was more often sighted in farmers market parking lots and at the local REI more so than on road course. In Japan, enthusiasts took a different approach, as models like this 1996 Legacy GT-B came standard with a firebreathing twin turbo flat-4, with a manual gearbox to keep enthusiasts intrigued. It looks the part, with Liberal 3P aero, a ChargeSpeed rear wing, Ganador mirrors, and a vented VIS carbon fiber hood too. Save for some nicks in the paintwork the exterior shows well and the 119k verified and documented miles put this wagon at a fraction of what our stateside examples usually see. 18" AVS model 7 wheels give this Legacy an award winning stance and Tein coilovers help eliminate any unsightly fender gap. A unique tourer, this Legacy would make a great daily driver, weekend backroad warrior, or a Subaru meet standout. Get behind the wheel and experience a real Japanese Classic!
The interior is packed with personality and has plenty of power equipment to get the job done. It also has striking blue accents, and was clearly cared for in a prior life. Optimized for safety, the dash houses dual SRS airbags and shows no major defects apart from a broken fiberglass mount on top. The center stack is still fully intact, housing digital automatic climate control with cold A/C to help you tackle those summer swelters. The adjacent OEM audio still sounds great for its age too. Power windows, locks, and mirrors are all fully functional to assist daily use, and this Legacy features an optional dual moonroof suite, with a power tilt front and retracting middle glass to funnel in extra natural ventilation. A proper estate would be nothing without a spacious cargo area, and in addition to having ample head and legroom in the rear seat, the bench can fold fully flat to create a bevy of extra storage. The headliner is tight and tidy, as are the carpets, although we wanted to note the trunk floor insert is missing. The dash shows some distortion around the digital speedometer but if you can see past this and some wear to the touch points, the interior is nearly perfect for all circumstances!
Sporting a hybrid EJ25 build retaining the original twin turbochargers, this flat four unfortunately suffered ringland failure and will need a new shortblock. On the plus side, we have this unit road tested and up to date on drivetrain service so you'll be primed and ready for its maiden voyage! An HKS intake and Silent Hi-Power exhaust also sweeten the deal a bit and work to unlock an intoxicating boxer rumble. The enthusiast's pick, a 5 speed manual gearbox allows you to command your own shifts and new CV boots at the front help power make its way to the symmetrical AWD system reliably. We even changed out the rear differential input seal as there was a slight seep. The suspension was freshened up with new rear subframe bushings and swaybar links up front, and we replaced a ripped front left steering rack boot. There's even a set of STi Brembo brakes installed to aid performance driving. This wagon is a treat to drive and the AVS wheels are wrapped in nearly new Falken rubber. Ideal for the Subaru shade tree mechanic, this unique Legacy is too handsome to pass up!
