1996 Hilux Surf SSR-X 3.0TD
Toyota has been belting out the hits for years in the midsize SUV market. This 1996 Hilux Surf was redesigned for its third iteration, offering more room, capability, and safety features. Finished in a Stellar Blue over Gray two-tone (8L7) the body is in good shape aside from a few minor dings, chips, and scratches associated with normal use. The resurfaced, gray factory alloys subtly set off the exterior colorway and pair nicely with the factory rainguards. Best of all, this SSR-X is powered by the legendary 1KZ-TE, which is one hell of a punchy turbo-diesel powerplant. Combine the 3.0L with a durable 4x4 system featuring a center locking differential, again not sold stateside, this rig is nearly unstoppable. Offered with only 130k verified and documented miles, this truck is barely done getting broken in! Fresh off a recent service, this year-round hauler would make for a distinctive kid transporter, weekend trail truck, or daily driver. For the SUV enthusiast who knows what they want, this collectible Hilux Surf can be your Japanese Classic today!
The cabin is simple and has space for five. The new standard in Japan around this time was the implementation of airbags. This Surf features dual front SRS airbags as standard equipment. The dash is in good shape lacking any cracking or distortion. Automatic climate control is standard and the controls are intuitive and straightforward. The A/C works when called upon and for winter the heat is boiling! The gray upholstery is in good shape and lacks any major blemishes such as rips, stains, or tears. Aside from the missing rear headrests, it's hard to complain about the cabin condition. Electric windows, door locks, and mirrors are standard and work as they should. Even the OEM audio still functions. The headliner, door cards, and carpet are still in fine shape and even the factory owners manuals are still sitting in the glovebox.
We generally feel shafted as Americans, as many incredible automotive designs never make it to our shores. While we did get gasoline-powered versions here in the US called the 4Runner, but the powerful and efficient turbodiesel never made it. It's a shame because the engine is an absolute gem. Fresh off an oil and filter service the 3.0L turns over quickly thanks to a new 12v battery. The four-banger idles with confidence and is connected to an automatic gearbox. Shifts occur seamlessly and the driver can select two or four-wheel drive from within the cabin. The Japanese Surfs also received a center locking differential, unlike the US trucks. On sand and loose surfaces, the locker provides much more capability and is a must-have for enthusiasts. The suspension is predictable and can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse, and a new right rear axle seal has been installed to keep her running tip-top. The brakes are confident and the power steering makes parking stress-free. The split tri-spoke alloys are all wrapped in new Falken tires at all four corners. They will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and provide year-round grip!
