We sell tons of Hilux Surfs because Toyota built them too well! Seriously though, the model has some serious staying power thanks to its rugged 4x4 system and durable drivetrains. This 1996 is no exception and boasts a punchy 1KZ-TE turbodiesel and a surprisingly well-equipped interior to boot. It represents the third revision to the Hilux Surf and is more refined, powerful, capable, and even a bit safer as well. Finished in Stellar Blue (8L7) and offered with a mere 121k verified and documented miles, the body is in good shape aside from some minor dings and scuffs associated with normal use. Recently service and legally imported this Japanese Classic rig is one you won't want to miss out on and could pull grocery duty just as easily as it could trek through the Sierra's!

The interior is much plusher than a base Hilux Surf. In fact, the SSR-G was the most desirable trim and as such, it comes with a few neat extras. Standard on this model and new for the third iteration of the vehicle was dual SRS front airbags. Besides these being added to the dash it still looks uncluttered and provides a commanding view of the road ahead. Instead of the cracking and distortion that plague the previous generation Surfs, these are made with much better material and this one doesn't have any major blemishes. Power windows, locks, and electric folding mirrors are all standard and work properly. This one even has the optional power sunroof that tilts and power retracts for better ventilation. It also adds a fair amount of natural light to the cabin making it feel much larger. If you don't want the breeze the automatic climate control system is intuitive and blows cold A/C to help endure these remaining summer months. The rear privacy glass also aids in keeping the cabin temps down and protecting the interior plastics from becoming brittle and cracked. The seats are trimmed in a gray cloth that is thick and durable. Comfortable for long trips, the material lacks any rips, stains, or tears. The door cards look equally good and the headliner and carpets have resisted major wear. The back glass powers down if you have some extra long lumber or a canine companion to ride with you. That's not to say the interior is perfect as we did want to note that the audio is currently not working while the OEM head unit is powered, the speakers work intermittently. Our favorite feature is the power rear backup mirror that powers down for the spoiler to guide you into parking sports without totaling the Elantra behind you. This works as it should and is too cool not to show off, frankly!

The mechanicals are stout and have been designed to last the test of time. These chassis share many components with our US Tacoma and 4Runners so ownership is stress-free. The ride is way more refined than the vehicle it replaced, although it powered by the same engine. Our Hilux utilizes the 3.0L 1KZ-TE to propel it, and this one is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly thanks to two new 12v batteries. These should last for at least four more years and provide all the cold cranking amps you need to get through winter. The 1KZ also received a new engine air filter to ensure it breaths properly and can return some decent MPGs. The fuel economy is much better than the gas equivalent and it's a whole lot more powerful to boot. The other improvement is the increased capability of the 4WD system. The driver can choose between 2WD and 4WD depending on the road conditions but if it gets really rough outside the cabin then a center locking differential can be locked in to get you going. The other cutting-edge option was the TEMS adjustable suspension. These dampers can be adjusted to change the ride quality to suit the driver's preference. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use if need be and is composed on the tarmac and at higher speeds. One of the benefits of the multilink rear suspension over conventional leaf springs is a smoother on-road ride and increased articulation to bolster its off-road prowess. The brakes are confident and the hydraulic steering is as connected as an SUV can be. The five-spoke silver alloy wheels are all wrapped in new all-terrain tires. These look great, deliver premium year-round grip, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. We even mounted a matching tire to the spare as well although we hope you don't need to use it!
