We love to import the N185 Hilux Surf and have no plans of stopping any time soon. These trucks are rock solid, and share a driveline with the US version, making parts and service easy as pie. This 1996 is finished in Sunfire Red Pearl (3K4), the SUV is adorned with a set of subtle OEM rainguards, and sports a classy yet understated aesthetic. Aside from a few light dings and chips, the paint is in good shape as is the condition of the interior. Fresh off a recent service, this 4WD rig is being offered with only 93k verified and documented miles. For someone looking for reliable daily transport, a family hauler, or wants to adventure down some dusty backroads this Toyota would be ideal. Affordable, trustworthy, and turn key ready to roll, this special JDM SUV is a bonafide Japanese Classic.

The cabin is in really good nick, comes with some decent equipment and a few upgrades. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding, and this tall ride height is great for visibility. For the first time in the model's storied history, dual front SRS airbags were made standard. The dash itself is in good shape and lacks any cracking or distortion. A sizable glovebox houses the factory manuals and the center console adds additional storage. The driver benefits from an adjustable steering column and lumbar support, as well as functional electric windows, door locks, and mirrors. The seats are comfortable on long trips and the gray corduroy lacks any major imperfections, aside from two minor holes on the driver's seat bottom that are barely noticeable. The door cards have withstood major abuse over the years, as has the headliner. It even has the OEM multicolored floor mats still installed! Automatic climate control is standard and features functional A/C and heat. Our favorite upgrade is the clear Clarion headunit. Rare and desirable it sounds great and oozes 90's appeal! That is not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note some light carpet staining and that the sunroof is inoperable. Still, at 25 years old this old girl is in wonderful nick, overall, especially compared to US examples for sale on the open marketplace. As a daily driver, we really couldn't recommend anything better to enjoy a commute in all year round!

In the US, we never got a diesel option but had a few choices of gasoline engines. The 3RZ-FE powers this Surf and is fresh off a recent oil and filter service and benefits from a new engine air filter. The 2.7L turns over promptly thanks to a new 12v battery, which should last for a few years to come. The engine idles with confidence and is mated to an automatic gearbox. A new valve cover gasket was installed while it was up on the lift and now the four-banger stays topped up with oil. Through a selective transfer case, the driver has the option to choose 2WD for maximum efficiency or 4WD for maximum traction. Even a low gear set is available if you're really stuck in the muck. Around town or on the highway this truck drives really well. Shifts are seamless and the acceleration is more than adequate to get up to and sustain highway speeds. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use and feels predictable, even over large road imperfections. The brakes are capable of stopping this midsize SUV when necessary and the all-terrain tires are knee-deep in tread.
