This Hilux Surf has always been an overachiever. Its reliability, performance, and low cost of ownership make this Japanese Classic a wonderful choice for a daily driver, weekend adventure truck, and kid hauler alike! This 1996 is an absolute stunner, with its fresh coat of Toyota Blueprint (8X8) paint. Set off by a factory rear spoiler, rear privacy tint, and gunmetal refinished factory alloy wheels, this Surf is in good shape aside from some light body imperfections. Powered by a punchy and frugal diesel four-banger, this KZN185 is fresh off a recent service and sports 111k verified and documented miles on the ticker. Collectible, capable, and fun to drive, this terrific Toyota might just be the best midsize JDM SUV of all time!

The cabin features decent ergonomics, a few handy power amenities and loads of space. It even includes some upgrades, like the modern Pioneer headunit that works to jazz up your commute. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and an adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. For additional information about the outside weather conditions and direction of travel, an optional OEM field monitor is located next to the map lights for easy viewing. Dual SRS airbags are standard for those riding up front, and the center stack includes controls for the functional automatic climate control that can dial in the air conditioning and heat as required. It works like a charm, as do the power windows, door locks, and power mirrors. The seats are in good shape aside from a few tiny holes on the driver seat bottom. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears otherwise, and the middle row has the ability to tumble forward to create a flat loading floor to maximize cargo room. They also split fold, as well. That is not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note an inoperable sunroof, a small amount of lifting on the dash by the glovebox, and a few light carpet stains. On the positive side, the door cards and headliner are in wonderful shape, and overall the truck appears to have been cared for overseas in a prior life.

The simple yet sturdy mechanicals are one of the reasons these 4Runners and Surfs are still around in droves. The 1KZ-TE is fresh off a recent service and churns over quickly, care of two new 12v batteries. To maintain the proper oil level a new valve cover gasket was installed here in the shop. New serpentine belts keep the electronics properly powered while a new engine air filter and fuel filter keep the 3.0L running right as rain. The four-banger is mated to a stout automatic transmission that is geared properly for sustained highway use and is responsive about town from stoplight to stoplight. If a camping trip is in order and you need to traverse through loose road surfaces, 4WD can be engaged as can the optional center-locking differential. The suspension provides loads of ground clearance, and is predictable and connected for an SUV. New rear sway bar end links and rear upper control arms were installed while it was up in the air and we also replaced the tires with new 31" Falkens. The ABS brakes are confident and the power steering is light yet direct. For someone who is looking to turn the key and go, this road-ready Surf is a safe bet and this collectible SUV is only going up in value from here!
