This Hilux is the epitome of a "real" SUV. Today, manufacturers readily sell tall-sedans with sport utility bodies. These soft-roaders can't compete with this turbodiesel, body on frame, 1995 Surf. Its rugged 4x4 system is mated to a manual transmission, which nowadays, is almost extinct. Finished in Dark Blue Pearl (8E3), the body is in good shape other than some minor dings and dents associated with normal use, and is accented by a polished bull bar and a set of rain guards. Offered with a mere 86K verified miles, this legally imported and recently serviced truck is as desirable as they come, and a bonafide Japanese Classic.

The cabin has been cared for in Japan, as evidenced by its condition. Spartan in its design, this Hilux features a tilt steering column, front cupholders, and power locks and windows for the driver to control. It's all stock except for a head unit upgrade care of Sony. The speaker's work and but we prefer to hear the turbo sounds the 3.0L makes, frankly. The cabin boasts clean carpets, door cards, and headliner, and a leather center console cover. The blue and gray seats are in above average shape and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. They are comfortable over long cruises and the rear bench can fold all the way forward to maximize cargo volume. The rear tailgate drops down for quick loading and the rear window is electric and can retract for increased cabin ventilation. That's not to say the interior is perfect as there are some cracks in the dash and the power mirrors now must be manually adjusted. Still, at 26 years old this Hilux is impressive.

This SSR-X is a tough little bugger. It's also simple in its design, and known for its low cost of ownership and readily available parts. The engine powering this rig is a 3.0L 1KZ-TE four-cylinder. Fresh off an oil and filter service, she turns over quickly with the twist of the key thanks to two new 12V batteries that have been installed by one of our techs. They should last for the next four to five years and never leave you stranded on a cold night. While this large-displacement four-cylinder isn't the most refined, it benefits from a fresh set of glow plugs to ensure seamless cold start operation. The enthusiasts reading this article will be excited to know that this Toyota was optioned with a stickshift. The five-speed unit makes the vehicle more fun to drive and is geared nicely for both city and interstate use. The gearbox is mated to a selective transfer case. It has the option for low gearing as well if the going gets tough and 2WD can be selected for optimal MPG. The suspension feels assured, as do the brakes and the steering is power-assisted. The factory alloys are all wrapped in new all-terrain rubber at all four corners. These new tires look killer and will ensure premium year-round grip.
