Exterior Overview
One of the latest automotive trends is the hyper-luxurious van. We would contest it’s hardly a trend, as Toyota has produced vehicles like this 1995 HiAce for more than three decades. Filled with premium materials, loads of power upgrades, a refined ride, and oodles of space, it’s easy to see why vehicles like these are ideal people movers. Finished in a classic Light Beige Metallic (4K1) this Super Custom is set off by OEM rainguards, a Terzo roof ladder, and some stylish refinished OEM 16″ Hilux Surf alloys. Aside from a few light dings, chips, scuffs, and light hail damage on the roof and bonnet, the paint is in good nick and this rig is fresh off a recent service. Offered with a mere 116k verified and documented miles, this 4WD turbodiesel model is barely broken in. Perfect for a relaxing road trip and robust enough to survive the rough and tumble daily commute, this Japanese Classic does it all and does it well!
Interior Overview
The cabin is a cozy place and it features tons of electric options and fun flexible seating options. The driver and passenger are located close to the simple to use climate system mounted in the center stack. The controls are intuitive and cold A/C and heat can be mixed through the cabin easily. Rear occupants have their own dedicated controls and climate zone. Below the climate settings is the OEM head unit. It functions properly and delivers tunes to supplement your cruise. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and the outward visibility is as good as anything we sell, thanks to the cab-forward layout. The driver can find the ideal driving position thanks to a tilt-adjustable steering column. Power-folding mirrors, electric locks, and power windows all work like a charm, making daily use more enjoyable. The seats are in above-average shape and were protected by OEM lace seat covers. The upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears and injects a healthy dose of color into the cabin. The middle and rear rows both slide fore and aft and the middle bench also swivels 180 degrees to face the rear. You can even create a pseudo-sleeping surface for overnight outings at the campsite. The side door opens wide for easy loading, and if left ajar it pulls itself closed electronically to prevent your battery from going flat. The tailgate raises to a height of 6 feet in case you have something sizable to stow and the lack of a moonroof increases the amount of room within the cabin. That’s not to say everything is perfect as we wanted to note some light scuffs some of the touch surfaces, and some light carpet staining. Aside from that it’s hard to nitpick this Hiace and even the owner’s manuals and maintenance booklets are included with the purchase of this van!
Mechanical Overview
With its diesel engine mounted midship, this HiAce is more balanced than it gets credit for. The 1KZ-TE is fresh off an oil and filter service and churns to life with the twist of the key. Like all of our diesels, we installed a new fuel filter and one of our trained techs gave the four-banger a light refresh. To keep the oil level on full, we replaced the old weary valve cover gasket and half moon seal with a new one. The 1K runs tip-top and is mated to a stout automatic gearbox. The transmission makes good use of the prodigious low-end torque and feeds power through a FullTime 4WD system. It accelerates impressively for such a large aerodynamically-challenged object. Even sustained highway cruising is effortless. It’s equally impressive how quickly this Toyota slows down, and new front brake pads are there for immediate clamping power. The short wheelbase allows for easy parking in the tight confined of the city and on the tarmac, the soft suspension gobbles up large and small potholes alike. New rear sway bar links and bushings improve the ride and we also replaced the front sway bar links for state inspection. The power steering is light yet direct and this van goes right where you point it. Grip is handled by four new Falken all terrain tires mounted and balanced at each corner. The new rubber will last for tens of thousands of miles to come and quells road noises nicely. Turn key and ready to rock, this van is the coolest on the block!
