Our dealership has been in business for twelve years now, and we have always maintained a healthy enthusiast following. While hundreds of Silvias, Skylines, and Supras have passed through our doors, the truck market has an equal share of raving fanatics looking for tough, fun and reliable vehicles. This 1995 Land Cruiser is just such an SUV, with its manual gearbox and legendary turbodiesel powerplant. Set off by a set of pricey Work Deerfield multipiece wheels, an imposing OEM brushguard with twin amber fog lamps, a rear hitch receiver and a subtle set of front rainguards, this Prado doesn't just drive well, it's quite the looker. Aside from a few light dings chips and scuffs, the Dark Emerald Green over Flaxen Mica Metallic (26Z) two-tone paint is in good shape overall and this recently serviced rig boasts a mere 165k verified and documented miles on the clock. Collectible, capable, and known for its rock solid Toyota durability, it's easy to see why this SX is a top-tier Japanese Classic.
The 70 was initially designed as a two door model, but for obvious reasons, the four door has more appeal. The interior is noticeably larger as front and rear passengers can enjoy copious headroom, and way more legroom, than the aforementioned smaller versions offered at the time. Even better, this example is equipped with the rare and useful third-row seating. The option allows for two extra pals to pile in a pinch and can also be stowed away agains the D-pillar! This cabin has held up remarkably well over the years and was clearly cared for in a prior life. It even has the original owner's manual on hand. The seats are the highlight of the cabin, with their stylish textured blue over charcoal cloth. Soft to the touch and in above-average shape they lack any major rips, stains or tears. The driver benefits from power adjustable lumbar support and a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the optimal driving position. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are in good nick as well, and even the OEM audio functions. Positioned below, drivers will be enthused to see this classic truck has working HVAC, and the A/C blows cold just in time for some summer runs to the beach. The rear bench can stow forward, and the third row up against the D-pillars if you need to prioritize cargo space in the rear, and it's nice to see the previous owner took care of the headliner and factory carpet as well. Overall, this cabin is above average for a 70 series. There's some expected hairline cracking atop the dash but it's not much to complain about in the grand scheme of things. For a daily driver or weekend hauler, this cabin will get it done.
The simple body-on-frame design is one of the reasons for this J78s longevity. It's able to stand up to tons of abuse, as can the hearty 1KZ-TE engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L fires up promptly with a new 12v battery. So that the new owner starts out on the right foot, one of our trained techs replaces the serpentine belts, engine air filter, and fuel filter too. The four-banger is linked to a five-speed manual, which makes this platform more entertaining to drive. The transmission lacks any hitches or grinds and is linked to a selective transfercase. The driver can motor around in 2WD to maximize acceleration and fuel economy and switch to 4WD when necessary. If that doesn't get the job done, electronic locking hubs and a low range can be engaged without leaving the comfort of the driver's seat. This Cruiser is a blast to row gears from stoplight to stoplight and sustained highway cruising is comfortable for a vehicle with origins dating back to the early Reagan administration. The suspension provides loads of ground clearance although it feels a bit tired over larger road imperfections, and this is one of the best driving Prados we have had in recent memory. The brakes are capable of slowing down this boxy bruiser, and grip comes from freshly mounted and balanced 31" Falken all-terrain rubber. The power steering is light and on point and makes this sizable ute a snap to park. Turn key ready for daily use, a weekend on the trails, or hauling the kids to soccer, this special Cruiser surely won't last long!
