Beloved for its performance appeal, durable powertrain, sporty styling, and low cost of ownership the Hilux Surf reigns supreme among the midsize SUVs. This Desert Dune Metallic (1A5) Surf is a stellar example of Toyota's prolific five-seat ute, and this one is set off by a set of OEM Rainguards, an optional rear spoiler, rear window applique, and a desirable spare tire swingarm. Additionally, the front valence and grille are OEM optional and add a welcome touch of modern appea. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the paint is no worse for the wear and this recently serviced rig boasts a mere 132k verified and documented miles. Best of all, this truck was spec'd with the best-performing engine offered in this chassis, the intercooled 1KZ-TE. For the discerning enthusiast, adventurers on the go, or busy families, this truck is the ideal fit. Functional, fast, and collectible this Japanese Classic is darn near perfect, and will only go up in value from here!
The cabin is spacious and nicely equipped. The cabin is also a bit safer than the prior generation and front occupants benefit from dual SRS front airbags. The driver has decent outward visibility thanks to this truck's tall ride height, an adjustable steering column, and adjustable lumbar support to find the optimal driving position. Power windows, door locks, and electric folding mirrors are all standard and work like a charm. Even a power mirror folds down from the rear spoiler providing the driver with a view of the rear bumper when reversing to park. A functional Eclipse headunit pairs nicely with the automatic climate control system mounted above. The latter of which is on standby ready to blast cold A/C or piping hot heat through the cabin. If you are a fan of more natural ventilation, the rear glass powers down, and the OEM optional sunroof can be unfurled. Positioned adjacent to the sunroof controls is a functional factory field monitor, which Toyota enthusiasts and aspiring meteorologists will certainly enjoy. The upholstery is in above-average shape and lacks any major rips, stains or tears, The rear bench relines 4 ways unlike lowly US 4Runners and can also fold flat to create a sizable cargo area. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have all withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse, and it's clear to see this car was cared for in a prior life overseas. That's not to say the cabin is perfect as we did want to note some minor warping on the dash located by the right corner of the glove box and the tachometer is inoperable. On the positive side, we do have the original owners manuals and it is to be included with the sale of the Surf.
The body on the frame platform is able to withstand loads of abuse as can the nearly bulletproof 1KZ-TE engine. Fresh off a recent service, this Hilux is ready to attack a road trip immediately. The 3.0L is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up with the twist of the key. Power is supplied from a new 12v battery that was installed here in the shop. A fuel filter and engine air filter replacement were also performed, keeping unwanted contaminants out of the powerplant. Additionally, we replaced the tired old serpentine belts with fresh ones and took care of a new valve cover gasket as well. Linked to a slick-shifting automatic, power is fed to the rear wheels or all four depending on the driver's preference. The selective transfercase even has a low-range 4WD setting and a center locker to keep your momentum moving forward, even on less-than-ideal surfaces. The ABS brakes bite down nicely and the suspension is predictable and offers loads of ground clearance. The power steering is light yet point and grip comes from new 31" all-terrain Falkens mounted and balanced at all four corners.
