If you need a midsize SUV that does it all, look no further than the KZN185 Hilux Surf. This 1995 turbo diesel version is well equipped and more capable than almost every modern sports utility on the market. Finished in Stellar Blue (8L7), and adorned by a subtle set of OEM rainguards and rare JAOS mudflaps, the body is in good shape aside from some minor dings, scuffs, and chips. Manufactured during the brand's golden era, these Surfs are known globally for their low cost of ownership and rugged determination. The durable 4x4 drivetrain is killer on snow and sand, yet the platform is refined on the tarmac, too. You see, you really can have it all, and this 157k verified and documented mile truck is just the ticket. Recently serviced and legally imported this powerful, safe, spacious, efficient and practical JDM hauler is a certified Japanese Classic.

The cabin saw a monumental upgrade when the N130 generation was phased out. For the first time ever dual SRS airbags were made standard for the Surf, which was uncommon in the early '90s among its competitors. The quality of the interior materials was brought up considerably, and it shows 25 years later. The view of the road ahead is clear and commanding as this ute rides far above traffic. The dash is in good shape overall although we did want to note a small split less than an inch in length located above the driver instrumentation and some light distortion by the glovebox. The pilot benefits from a full slate of power controls and an adjustable steering column that allows those behind the wheel to find the proper driving position. Electric windows, locks, and power mirrors work like a charm. The power-folding function is not working on the driver's side so it must be folded manually. The old radio was ditched in Japan for a working Alpine unit and the sound quality isn't half bad. The automatic climate control is easy to use and intuitive and the a/c blows cold at the moment. For those who prefer more natural ventilation an electric tilting and retractable sunroof sits atop the roof. By the sunroof, controls is an LCD field monitor that displays the direction of travel, temperature, and a few other vitals. The seats are trimmed in a durable grayish-blue cloth. They are comfortable over long cruises and lack any major rips stains or tears aside from a small cut on the rear passenger seatback. For those who need a more supportive seat, these Surfs include manual lumbar adjustments. The headliner and carpets have been cared for and the door cards look good too. Even the rear glass is powered and our favorite feature is the electronic backup mirror that unfurls from the rear spoiler so that you don't cream the Ford Focus located behind you when parking. It's obvious this car was cared for in a prior life and we have no doubts that the next owner will benefit from that.

The secret to the 185s success is all under the skin. The 1KZ-TE is a legendary engine, and powers this example. Fresh off an oil and filter service the 3.0L fires up promptly thanks to two new 12v batteries installed here in our shop. The four-banger is mated to a selective transfer case that allows the driver to choose between 2WD and 4WD. The diesel-powered rigs also received a center locking differential from the factory, which makes quick work of almost anything that will stand in your way. The automatic gearbox shifts seamlessly and lacks any hesitation or issues shifting. Acceleration is impressive and the low-end grunt is prominent. Sustained highway cruising is comfortable and the 1KZ delivers decent fuel economy as well. The suspension can handle the rigors of daily use, as can the brakes, and the steering is nicely weighted and fairly communicative for a truck. The six-spoke factory alloys are all wrapped in new all-terrain tires that will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. They will deliver premium year-round grip and suit the overall aesthetic. We even replaced the spare with a matching tire to boot!
