If you're an automotive die-hard and a fan of the show Top Gear, you'll likely remember the episode features the indestructible Hilux truck. This vehicle, the Toyota Hilux, can now be yours to own here stateside. Utilizing a robust four-cylinder turbo diesel and rugged 4WD this SSR-X even has a few power amenities that make it quite civil while on the road. A midsize SUV, the Surf has room for five adults and all the cargo that goes along with an active lifestyle. Often referred to as the perfect size, it fits between the 80 and 70 series in terms of size and is easy to park while not feeling cramped. Factory running boards are helpful when climbing up into the cockpit, and the ride height does wonders for visibility. The dash is in good shape, devoid of any major defects including discoloration or cracking. Beyond the privacy tint installed in Japan, the only other interior upgrade to note on the vehicle is a functional touch screen Eclipse head unit. It's the little things that matter, and additional standard power options include locks, power windows, and mirrors. Also, it is uncommon for Japanese imports to have cupholders, and this Hilux actually comes with two! Trimmed with blue and grey cloth, the factory seats offer nice bolstering and are comfortable on long drives. Devoid of any major imperfections, such as holes, stains, and rips, they are a good indicator the old owners prized this Surf. The headliner is in good shape, and eagle-eyed clients might notice an OEM sunroof up top. This unit functions properly and allows more natural light in the cabin and some much-needed ventilation. The climate control system works during all seasons, although most folks won't need the A/C for a few more months. The carpets and door cards match, and like the interior plastics, have very few imperfections The cargo area is clean, and like the US 4Runner electronically powered rear window that fully retracts into the tailgate. Powering the rig is Toyota's legendary 2982cc 1KZ-TE turbodiesel. This large four-banger is revered for its bulletproof reliability, low cost of ownership, and sumptuous amounts of torque. With a turn of a key, it turns over and jolts to life. It sets into a constant idle, and the off the line thrust is fantastic. The transmission, an automatics, shifts into gear nicely and does have any hesitations or clunking to be spoken of. The 4WD system, which is full time, features a selective high and low-speed transfer case. The factory suspension provides plenty of ground clearance and handles bumps large and small. The brakes are able to slow this truck down properly, and the steering is light and easy to actuate. New rubber is mounted and balanced at all four corners on the factory alloys. Our trained technicians even included a 5th all-terrain Falken for the tailgate-mounted spare. Fresh off routine maintenance, and Virginia State safety inspected, the only thing this Surf needs is a new owner.
