The Hilux Surf is our best-selling platform. They are aesthetically pleasing, reliable, and capable. This 1994 KZN130 is a stunner, with its one-off Espresso Bronze Metallic paint. Aside from a few scuffs, chips, and dings the paint is in good shape and this rig is set off by refinished 16" Land Cruiser wheels, a stylish rear spoiler, chrome mirror caps, and aggressive privacy tint. Best of all this Toyota is powered by one of the brand's most trusty turbodiesels, the 1KZ-TE. Fresh off a recent service, this distinctive truck is turn key ready to roll, and offered with a mere 140k verified and documented miles on the clock. Easy to service, frugal, and performance-oriented, this five-seater is practical and cool at the same time. Perfect for year-round use, or as a fun offroad playtoy, this Japanese Classic is unmatched.

The cabin is simple, features decent ergonomics, and includes a few upgrades. The faux wood grain trim breaks up the cabin nicely and matches an aftermarket wood steering wheel. The audio was also updated to a functional Bluetooth equipped Panasonic unit. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering wheel and adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. Power mirrors and locks work like a charm and make daily use more enjoyable. The blue cloth patterned seats are in good nick, and lack any rips, stains, or tears. The middle row folds forward to create a flat loading floor and they also four-way recline for rear passenger comfort. Cold A/C floods the cabin when called upon, which is key this time of year, and the climate controls are simple to use and close by. The Surf also has functional heat, too should you need it. For those who prefer more natural ventilation, the rear glass retracts into the hatch, and electric side windows roll down with the press of a button. The headliner and door cards are in good shape and the carpets show no major abuse. Aside from the dashboard suffering from the typical cracks seen on these models, its hard to complain about the cabin, and this Hilux was clearly cared for overseas.

While this generation Surf was sold here in the US as the 4Runner, we missed out on this glorious powerplant under the hood. Our example is powered by the aforementioned 1KZ-TE, which is fresh off an oil and filter service. The four-banger churns to life care of two new 12v batteries and breathes freely thanks to a new engine air filter. Like all of our diesels, we exchanged the old fuel filter with a new one and replaced the old serpentine belts with new ones to keep the electronics properly powered. We refreshed the 3.0L with a new valve cover gasket and half-moon seals so that the turbo diesel runs right as rain. It's linked to a stout automatic that makes good use of the prodigious low-end torque created by the diesel. It shifts properly and benefits from a transmission fluid service. It feeds power through a selective transfer case to the rear, or both axles, depending on the driver's preference.  In case a beach outing or trail trip is planned a low range 4WD gear can be selected to ensure top-tier off-road prowess. Acceleration is impressive for a classic SUV and the Surf feels light on its feet for something body on frame. New front shocks have been installed to sort out the ride quality and this platform feels predictable and never beats you up. It goes right where you point it, and the power steering is light and fresh off a rebuild of the power steering pump. New front brake pads were installed to keep stopping distances short and grip is handled by four new all-terrain tires mounted and balanced at each corner. Decent off the beaten path and ideal for those pounding the pavement, this N130 is a killer JDM SUV and won't let you down!
