A midship two-seater with killer mileage is a valuable addition to any collection, and this Japanese Classic is the cream of the crop.

Exterior Overview

If you’re an enthusiast shopping for a turbocharged mid-engine 2 seater, your options are generally pretty limited. Sure, you could whisk away your life savings and purchase a Lotus Evora, or you could save some coin and consider this SW20 MR2. Backed by Toyota reliability and every bit as fun to drive as the competition, models like this 1993 MR2 GT-S are really special, as the 38k miles on the clock are verified and documented. It looks good too, and is finished in a stately Black (202) and set off by a factory rear wing, and 17″ CE28 style alloys. The cosmetics are in above average shape overall however we did want to note a previous accident repair in the rear. Ideal as a countryside cruiser, these MR2’s are determined pocket rockets, fun for both daily use or weekend backroad jaunts. A midship two-seater with killer mileage is a valuable addition to any collection, and this MR2 Turbo is the cream of the crop. For these reasons, it should come as no surprise they’re considered Japanese Classics!

Interior Overview

With such low miles, you’d expect the interior to be good, but this classic cockpit really stands out! The seats are upholstered in a comfortable yet durable patterned cloth. They show virtually no rips, stains, or unwanted bolster wear, and the black vinyl dash is in equally good shape. Tucked away in the center console, USDM BOSS audio has Bluetooth functionality, and sounds great mated to some upgraded door speakers. The adjacent automatic climate control is easy to operate, and both cold A/C and hot heat are on tap if you turn this 2 seater into a year-round commuter. Both power windows work well, as do the locks. The power mirrors even electronically fold to deter any parking garage mishaps.  Nearly bone stock, the only upgrade is a Sparco steering wheel, which is mated to a quick release hub and feels nice in the palm overall. Withstanding the past three decades on the road and ready for a new chapter stateside, this is nearly a perfect cabin.

Mechanical Overview

Mounted midship, the 3S-GTE proves time and time again to be the perfect pairing for this nimble chassis. Tame around town and an absolute weapon when pushed to its limits, this punchy 2.0 is fresh off a recent service and drives about as well as any other Toyota we’ve seen here. It cranks over swiftly, care of a new 12v battery, and stays well lubricated with a fresh oil and filter service. We also installed a new valve cover gasket so you don’t lose a drop. New spark plugs were installed to assist combustion, and with the maintenance performed, this MR2 rockets up to highway speed with haste. A 5 speed manual gearbox commands power delivery and throws it right at the rear wheels, with no hitches or grinds to note. Handling is second to none, and we’ve done a fresh alignment to ensure this tiny two-door goes right where you point it. New brake pads on the rear offer plenty of stopping power, and the bronze alloys are wrapped in good Yokohama tires. Chock full of tread, you’ll stay glued to the pavement and will be able to push this midship monster to its full potential!
