Having logged a mere 108k verified and documented miles, this SSR-X is in much better shape than its high-mileage 4 Runner American counterparts.

Exterior Overview

When this 1996 Surf rolled off the assembly line, Toyota was in the middle of a SUV renaissance. The Surf was an anchor for the brand, with these midsize SUVs flying off the shelves in Japan and the US. Just like our domestic 4Runners, this rig is powered by the same trusty 2.7L gasoline powerplant, and ours is fresh off a  comprehensive service. Having logged a mere 108k verified and documented miles, this SSR-X is in much better shape than its high-mileage 4 Runner American counterparts. Even better, this Toyota ticks many of the boxes an enthusiast would care about. For instance, our Desert Dune Metallic (1A5) example was spec’d with a rare and prized five-speed manual gearbox. Set off by a set of black refinished OEM 16″ alloys, a factory bash bar, privacy tint, and a set of OEM rainguards, this hauler drives just as good as it looks and is in good shape aside from some minor dings, chips, and scuffs. Perfect as a daily driver, or fun campsite companion, this Japanese Classics receives high marks for practicality, reliability, and capability on and off the beaten path. Fun to drive, easy to service, and highly collectible, it’s obvious why the Hilux Surf is our best-selling platform!

Interior Overview

This cabin is one of the cleanest we have ever seen, which is saying something, as we have retailed hundreds of third gens. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and houses standard dual SRS airbags. The center stack is close by and includes functional OEM audio and a simple-to-use digital automatic climate control system. The latter blows cold A/C, and piping hot heat is available for those who may plan year-round use. If natural ventilation is preferable, a power sunroof unfurls and the rear and side glass can be lowered with the press of a button. The seats are in wonderful nick and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The driver has an adjustable lumbar support and the rear bench 4-way reclines. For increased cargo accommodation, the rear bench tumbles forward and created a flat loading floor. For daily driving, the power locks and mirrors work and the pilot even receives an adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position. The door cards, carpet, and headliner are in good shape, and it’s hard to criticize the cabin in general.

Mechanical Overview

The great thing about owning a Hilux Surf is that it is nearly identical to the 4Runner. This truck shares a driveline and running gear with its American stablemate, so parts are readily available and incredibly inexpensive. The 3RZ-FE under the hood is a really impressive engine. Ours starts up with the twist of the key thanks to a new 12v battery and combusts fuel properly thanks to a new set of spark plugs. As we do with all of our retail units, we performed an oil and filter service. One of our trained techs refreshed the 2693cc powerplant by addressing some pesky oil leaks. A new valve cover gasket and half-moon seals were installed, and we also replaced the distributor o-ring. For good measure, we performed a coolant flush, which is recommended every four years. It should be noted that this 2.7L mill lacks a timing belt and is chain-driven, saving on that expensive service down the road. The 3RZ is linked to a five-speed manual gearbox that is a blast to row up and down the gears. The transmission delivers a level of control to the driver that is absent from the slushbox and shifts occur without any hitches or grinds. For the best fuel economy and straight-line performance, the driver can opt to use rear wheel drive. One the fly 4WD can be engaged as well, through the selectable transfer case. If a beach or trail trip is on the docket, a low range can be engaged too, to keep the momentum moving forward. Also of note, our trained technicians installed a new transfer case output seal while it was on the lift. This RZN185 accelerates briskly, and ABS is standard, and reels in this Hilux from higher speeds. The brakes feel confident and are bolstered by new front brake pads. The suspension is predictable and connected. It can handle the rigors of daily use and abuse and is fairly robust. The power steering is light yet direct and we have completely rebuilt the steering rack and installed some new sway bar end links. Grip comes from four new 31″ Falken all-terrain tires. The new rubber not only looks mean, but quells road noise, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
