Soft-roaders and tall uni-body cars masquerade around as sports utility vehicles, but enthusiasts most certainly aren't fooled. When this 1993 Mitsubishi Pajero was sold new capable 4WD systems and rugged body on frame design were all the norm. The Pajero is arguably one of the most underrated of the SUVs from this era with its bulletproof turbo diesel yet room for 7. It's two-tone silver and green paint (H81/G31) fits the big boxy styling and is in great shape. Like any 27 year old vehicle with 87K verified miles it does have some scratches and stone chips, but nothing out of the ordinary. The same can be said about the bodywork which has been kept up with well! Rolling on beefy new 31" Falken off-road rubber it has the proper stance you expect for a capable off-roader. It even has the matching 5th wheel for good measure in case you find yourself in a pinch. The new 5 spoke brushed aluminum wheels are a nice upgrade over the original ones and help to get a little more rubber on the road.

For something as rugged-looking as the Pajero, the interior is wonderfully appointed. If you had to complain, you could make the argument that there are almost too many buttons; however, when you need to adjust the rear A/C or operate the large panoramic roof, you realize buttons are a good thing. The sunroof really does open up the feel of the cabin, even if the sliding feature is currently disabled. The interior makes the rugged underpinnings even more unassuming with its luxurious trimmings. The only hint to its roots inside is an assortment of gauges (Altimeter, Inclinometer, Compass/Thermometer) to accompany the main binnacle which shows 4WD selections, and adjustable shock settings as well. The soft gray seats are in surprisingly good shape. When dealing with lighter colored fabrics they have the tendency to show dirt and blemishes which makes this more impressive. The front seats offer great support and have been spared from the worrisome bolster wear from climbing in and out of the truck. The back seats are easy to work with and the 3rd row can be stowed against the sides when you'd rather have the added cargo capacity. If you find yourself not really needing the 3rd row then they can be removed relatively easily. These came equipped with fully automatic climate control for the front and rear rows make sure that everyone can find the right temperature. This comfortable and spacious interior will make you feel at home in the desert, on the trails, or at your local grocery store.

Getting down to the nuts and bolts of the Pajero, it's powered by Mitsubishi's famous turbo diesel 4 cylinder the 4M40. Being the second generation of the Pajero its larger displacement can definitely be felt over its predecessor, and this midsized ute has no issues getting up to speed on the interstate. Delivering impressive fuel economy, and know for its durability, it definitely gives competitors like Toyota a run for their money. Paired up with the automatic really is the best option for these. The auto is quick to engage and rolls through the gears with ease. These certainly don't feel like the '90s slushboxes that initially come to mind. The "Super Select" 4WD system was quite advance in '93 featuring on the fly select-ability between 2WD, 4WD High, 4WD High + Locked Center Differential, and 4WD Low +Locked Center Differential. All of these options can be selected at speeds up to 62 MPH. The steering and suspension all feel good, and this behemoth cruises over road imperfections without batting an eye. Up to date on maintenance, and receiving a fresh oil and filter service, this Mitsu is ready to conquer US terrain for the first time. With generous approach angles and tons of travel, the Pajero is plenty capable off-road but will still demonstrate civil driving characteristics when on the pavement. Offering without a doubt one of the best bang for the buck when it comes to performance and comfort you can't go wrong with a good Pajero!
