The Land Cruiser is one of Japan's most desirable SUV’s, and this 1992 HDJ81 VX limited is an excellent example. It features the bullet proof 1HD-T turbo diesel and plenty of tasteful modifications enhancing the already aggressive styling of the 80 series platform. Finished in Toyota's eye-catching Dark Bluish Gray Metallic (183) and accented with a set of OEM front rainguards and six spoke Topy Blows wheels the exterior of this rig has held up well over the year showing only minor dings, chips, and scuffs. Most 30-year-old vehicles have had some form of repair in their lifetime and this beauty is no exception. Previous repairs in Japan include a new hood and new front fenders. Fresh off a recent service, this Land Cruiser is offered with an impressive 96k verified and documented miles and makes for a great family hauler while also being plenty capable as a weekend off-roader. With Toyota’s notorious reliability, all weather usability, and a massive cabin this HDJ81 is ready for any new adventure you can dream up and surely won’t last long.

Once inside the spacious cabin, you’ll find the seats are trimmed in a soft cloth that lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. They are supportive on long trips and will comfortably seat five grown adults. The door cards and headliner are also in excellent condition lacking any notable imperfections. The VX model is equipped with power amenities for driver convenience, including power windows, power mirrors, power locks, and an electric sliding and tilt sunroof. All options work and make daily use convenient other than the power-folding feature on the side mirrors and heated seats. A tri-spoke woodgrain steering wheel replaced the OEM one which adds to the interior aesthetics and is paired with an adjustable tilt steering column. A working Eclipse head unit helps supply some entertainment on those long trips and a simple to use automatic climate system is standard and blows cold A/C thanks to the newly installed A/C compressor. There are a few cracks in the dash above the gauge cluster, which is a common issue on these older Cruisers due to years of UV exposure. Overall, with relatively low miles and the love and care taken by the previous owner in Japan, this interior is in above average condition and even retains its rare optional clean box located in the passenger foot well.

The 4.2L 1HD-T engine can be found under the hood. This indestructible iron block turbo diesel is known for its power and fuel efficiency. The mechanicals are simple and straightforward and the straight-six is fresh off an oil and filter service. Thanks to two new 12v batteries it starts up quickly and sets into a near vibration-free idle thanks to brand new drive belts. The automatic transmission with full-time 4wd easily sustains highway speeds and makes for decent acceleration around town. With the addition of low range gearing and a locking center differential this 80 series is just as capable off-road as it is on the tarmac. The brakes are confident and thanks to new front brake pads this big rig can stop on a dime. The steering is tight, and the suspension does a great job absorbing road imperfections making daily driving enjoyable. To complete the vehicle, we installed five new Falken all-terrain tires at all four corners and on the full-size spare. While reducing road noise these should provide plenty of grip year-round and last for thousands of miles to come.
