Exterior Overview

When we opened our doors 13 years ago it was a much different time. Skylines were plentiful, prices were cheap, and the import process was inexpensive. With its iconic styling and wide parts availability, this platform was at one time our best-selling model. This chassis has always been rewarding to drive, and beloved for its refinement, balance, and reliability. Sadly, supply has dwindled in the land of the rising sun, and clean examples like this 1990 are difficult to find. Finished in a classic Light Gray Metallic (TG0), this GTS-t is set off by a real-deal aluminum GTR hood, Type M rear spats, an OEM rear wing, OEM optional side skirts, a GTR style front bumper, and OEM V Spec alloy wheels. After three decades of road use, there are a few light dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal use around the body, but that does little to take away from this R32’s appeal. Fresh off a recent service including a timing belt and water pump replacement, this striking saloon would make a great platform to daily drive, or could be your cool weekend cruiser. Collectible, cool, and competent, this Japanese Classic can be yours today!

Interior Overview

The cabin is in above-average shape and was clearly cared for overseas. The first thing R32 enthusiasts will likely note is the dashboard, which is free of excessive bubbling or distortion around the glovebox. The gauges are easy to read and while the odometer shows 95k km, we couldn’t verify the mileage was original.  The center stack also includes a functional Pioneer radio upgrade, which supplements the sublime sounds of the RB under the hood. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal driving position, and daily driving is made more enjoyable thanks to functional power locks, power-folding side mirrors, and electric windows. The seats are in above-average shape and are upholstered in a durable gray tweed cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The same material is mirrored in the door cards, which ties everything together. The headliner is in good shape, as are the carpets, and aside from some light wear on the door plastics and shift lever, it’s really hard to complain about the cockpit.

Mechanical Overview

The driveline is wonderful, and the RB20DET is a smooth and powerful turbocharged engine. The two-liter cranks to life immediately care of a new 12v battery and is fresh off an oil and filter service. Six new spark plugs work to properly combust fuel and a new engine air filter helps the RB breathe freely. Contaminants are kept out of the engine thanks to a new fuel filter and we didn’t stop there. To save the new American owner some cash and add some peace of mind, one of our trained technicians has replaced the timing belt and water pump with brand new units. It’s always a good idea to take care of the thermostat, so we did, and then flushed the coolant and replaced it. It also received new valve cover gaskets and half moon seals. The DOHC motor is linked to a stout automatic gearbox. It makes good use of the RB’s midrange power and feeds torque to the rear axle. Acceleration is impressive for a small displacement, 30 year old powertrain, and an FGK catback exhaust cracks open a few more ponies to maximize driving enjoyment. Highway cruising is comfortable and we have refreshed the suspension with new front caster arms and upper control arms to give this R32 a new lease on life. The rear HICAS arms had too much play, so we swapped them out with new ones. A fresh alignment ensures this power steering-equipped saloon tracks straight as an arrow and the brand new tires will last for tens of thousands of miles to come. The handling is flat and predictable with few squeaks and rattles penetrating the cabin. It also slows down in jiffy care of new front brake pads and rotors. Although we couldn’t verify the mileage out of Japan, this turn-key and ready to roll R32 is in above-average shape and we feel the new owner will agree.
