Exterior Overview
The J100 Land Cruiser is superb in nearly every aspect. It’s reliable and capable, as you might expect, but this luxury steed also coddles occupants with its luxury appointments and buttery-smooth ride. This 1998 is a fine example of Toyota’s heralded heavy-duty design. Finished in Pearl White (057), this eight-seat V8 model is set off by classy gold badges, an OEM spare tire swingarm, LED tail lamps, a stylish OEM spoiler, factory rainguards, privacy tint, and super stylish 16″ Raguna alloys. Aside from a noted driver fender replacement in Japan and a couple of light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in fine shape, and this 4×4 is fresh off a recent comprehensive service. Boasting an astounding 68k verified and documented miles on the clock, this VX Limited has loads of life left in it. Ideal as a spacious and safe family ferry, this tough truck can pull double duty in the mountains and makes for a perfect campsite companion. Built to last, this collectible and cool Japanese Classic is highly desirable and practical, and looks like a million bucks!
Interior Overview
The cabin is expansive and nicely optioned. Rarely found, this example includes the factory 50th anniversary package, boasting tan leather seats which are in above-average shape. Both front occupants benefit from heated and power-adjustable seats, which work as they should. The driver benefits from an electric telescoping steering column. Rear occupants benefit from reclining rear seats that can also split fold and tumble forward to accommodate rear cargo. Optioned with a desirable third row, the rear-most jump seats can be stowed tidily against the D pillar. Power folding mirrors, power locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. Ice-cold A/C and piping hot heat can be dialed in using the factory touchscreen display. If you prefer more natural ventilation, a large OEM moonroof can tilt and retract, and the rear quarter glass pops outward to supplement airflow. The OEM audio works as it should, filling the cabin with tunes to supplement the V8 soundtrack from under the hood. Safety was a priority for Toyota, and they made ABS and dual SRS front airbags standard. The door cards are in good shape, as are the carpet and headliner, and it’s clear this truck was cared for in a prior life overseas. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect as we wanted to note the power tilt function no longer works, but the wheel is positioned comfortably overall. On the positive side, we added some new hatch struts so cargo loading would be easy as pie!
Mechanical Overview
This body-on-frame beast on able to withstand tough terrain and torturous environments. Equally as robust, the 2UZ-FE under the hood provides propulsion. This 4.7L is fresh off an oil and filter service and churns to life with the twist of the key, courtesy of a new 12V battery. A new engine air filter and set of accessory belts went on as soon as it got onto the lift. Fluid checks were made more seamless, thanks to a new set of hood shocks. The 2UZ is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that shifts smoothly. A Full-Time 4WD system helps power get to the ground and a new set of front CV boot clamps are on hand to assist. A low range and center locker can be engaged when traveling down the path less travelled, and this trusty Toyota is useful over sand, mud, and snow. The long wheelbase distributes bumps well, and new front lower control arms, front lower ball joints, and rear lower control arms were installed before this VX passed its VA state safety inspection. Best off all, one of our trained techs completely rehabbed the steering system. The rack was rebuilt with new seals, and new rack bushings and boots were replaced. New fluid was swapped in and new inner and outer tie rods were installed to help us dial in the proper alignment. The brakes feel confident, and the power steering is light and on point. The brand new Falken all-terrain tires should provide all the grip necessary for tens of thousands of miles to come. Turn-key and ready to rock, this clean, low-mileage Cruiser is hard to beat!
