Exterior Overview
It’s undeniable how good the Land Cruiser is. Seven decades spent conquering every continent will do wonders for your reputation, and this 2001 is a fine example of the 90 Series generation, which was produced from 96-02. Finished in a lovely Millennium Silver (K73), this TX model is set off by an OEM optional bumper protector, a factory soft tire cover, and a snazzy rhino-lined roof basket. Amber privacy tint and factory rainguards round off the aesthetic, and 16″ aftermarket alloys sit on all four corners. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in good shape, and this reliable rig is fresh off a comprehensive service. Boasting only 105k verified and documented miles on the clock, this 4×4 is barely broken in. Capable, cool, and practical, this Japanese Classic is perfect for families with active lifestyles, obsessed off-roaders, and everyone in between!
Interior Overview
The cabin is spacious and ergonomic. There is room for eight, and head, shoulder, and leg room are plentiful. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. A touchscreen Eclipse radio upgrade pumps out the tunes, and the automatic climate system below doles out piping hot heat and cold A/C. We did want to note the rear heat lines have been bypassed but that doesn’t affect the system much, if at all. Pilots of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column. Power folding mirrors, power locks, and power windows all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The seats are trimmed in a soft gray and blue cloth, which is mirrored in the door cards. The material lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The middle row can recline, split fold, and tumble forward to create a large cargo area. The rear quarter glass also pops out to aid ventilation. The door cards, carpets, and headliner have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse, and it’s clear the cockpit was cared for in a prior life overseas.
Mechanical Overview
The body on frame platform is overbuilt, and designed to withstand loads of abuse. The 3RZ-FE powerplant is equally as resilient and is fresh off an oil and filter service. The 2.7L churns to life with the twist of the key, courtesy of a new 12v battery. A new engine air filter works to maximize power and the 2.7L pulls hard to redline. It is linked to a stout automatic that shifts as it should. The FullTime 4WD system puts power to the ground well, and when the going gets tough, a center locker and low-range 4WD can be engaged to keep momentum moving forward. It reaches highway speeds reliably and can slow down with confidence, as ABS and four wheel disc brakes are standard. We swapped out the rear brake hoses, replaced the front brake pads, and flushed the fluid to ensure a linear pedal feel. The suspension was refreshed heavily. New front upper and lower control arms, and new front upper and lower ball joints were installed, as they are common failure points. A driver side inner tie rod, and front sway bar links and bushings were installed before we aligned this Prado. It tracks straight as an arrow, and the power steering is light and on point. Ready to hit the road, this easy to service and determined SUV leaves little to be desired!
