Exterior Overview
We missed out on some prolific SUVs here in the US. One of the standout designs absent from our market was the 90 Series Land Cruiser. This medium-duty platform is capable, refined, and inexpensive to service as it is based on the 4Runner. Our 1998 is also a looker, and is finished in a subtle Dark green Mica over Gray (K80) two-tone. Adorned by a set of refinished OEM 16″ wheels, OEM raingaurds, and a stylish factory bash bar, this TX model is classically handsome. Aside from some minor dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in good shape, and this turbodiesel-powered rig is fresh off a recent service. Boasting only 85k verified and documented miles on the clock, this 4×4 is barely broken in, and one of the nicer examples we’ve seen in recent memory. Ideal as a year-round daily driver, fantastic family hauler, or wild weekend overlander, this J95 can do it all! A killer overall value, this Japanese Classic shouldn’t be slept on!
Interior Overview
The cabin is in above-average shape overall and was clearly cared for in Japan. Access inside is made more seamless thanks to functional keyless entry. The driver can find the ideal piloting position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column, and daily use is made more enjoyable thanks to working power folding mirrors, power locks, and power windows. The center stack is close by and within arm’s reach. The OEM TV/Radio works like a charm and pumps tunes into the cabin to supplement your commute. Below the automatic climate control system doles out piping hot heat and cold A/C when required. For those riding in the rear, this Prado also includes the optional rear heating and A/C upgrade. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard. The upholstery is in above-average shape and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The same gray cloth is mirrored in the door cards, which have held up well over the years. The headliner is in good shape, and the sunroof is fully functional, supplementing airflow throughout the vehicle. The carpets are in fair shape and are protected by OEM carpet mats. With room for eight thanks to its stowable third row, this spacious cabin is ideal for transporting friends, family, and cargo.
Mechanical Overview
This prado’s beauty extends far below the skin. The ladder chassis is robust and can withstand the rigors of daily use and abuse, and the engine is also a hearty one. Intercooled for more power and to run lower EGTs, the 1KZ-TE is an enthusiast’s top pick. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 3.0L springs to life quickly courtesy of two new 12V batteries. We always replace the fuel filter when our diesels get on the lift, and we also replaced the engine air filter so the 1K could breathe freely. So that the oil level stays full, one of our trained techs replaced the valve cover gasket with a new one. The engine feels strong as an ox and generates loads of down-low grunt. It’s mated to an automatic gearbox that shifts properly and sends torque through a FullTime 4WD system. The selectable transfer case includes a setting to engage a factory center locker, and a low range is on hand if necessary. It accelerates well for a large SUV, and when you need to slow down, the ABS brakes have you covered. To keep stopping distances short, we replaced the front brake pads. The suspension is soft yet predictable, and we refreshed it significantly after it got into the shop. New front shocks, front sway bar links and bushings, and new rear lower control arms bushings were replaced. For state inspection, we also replaced the steering rack bushings, too. The steering is power-assisted and light, and the truck tracks straight as an arrow. Grip is handled by four new 31″ Falken all-terrain tires. Freshly aligned, the new rubber quells road noises, looks mean, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
