Exterior Overview
If you’re not a fan of modern, overdone SUV’s, this 1999 Land Cruiser Prado is a sight for sore eyes. It looks polished, with fresh Desert Sand (M7290A) paintwork and is easy to service, as the frame and mechanicals are shared with stateside 4Runner models. It’s also fresh off a recent service by our trained technicians, and can hang with the best of them on daily drives or off-road escapades. This fun and frugal 4WD looks the part too, set off by OEM rainguards, multicoat fog lamps, refinished factory alloys, and a rare factory optional brushguard. Best of all, the 82k miles on the clock are verified, documented, and do a lot to cement the appeal of this lovely Cruiser. The Prado is rapidly becoming one of our favorite SUV platforms at the dealership, and it goes without saying this lovely midsize rig is a true Japanese Classic!
Interior Overview
The cabin is in solid condition, and it’s refreshing to see that this example was well cared for by its previous Japanese owner. The upholstery is decidedly retro, finished in a durable grey cloth with colorful accent dashes. It spans all three rows of seating and is mirrored in the door cards, and is free of unwanted stains, tears, or excessive bolster wear. Also in good shape is the grey dash cover, despite some UV fading atop the passenger SRS airbag area. The driver gains an airbag too, for good measure, and it’s affixed to a tilt adjustable steering column that can be oriented at will. After finding the ideal driving position, the pilot can focus on making the cabin comfortable. The center stack is within arms reach and houses an easy to use automatic climate control unit. Cold A/C and hot heat are available in droves, and functional touchscreen Eclipse audio is on hand to drown out passengers. If you and the crew prefer a natural breeze, a full suite of power windows is operational, and the rear glass can butterfly outward for some supplementary airflow. The cabin offers up an abundance of head and legroom, and a stowaway 3rd row was optioned to increase seating capacity to eight. If you need to expand the cargo hold, the jump seats fold against the D-pillars, and the middle row can flip forward. The headliner and carpets are tidy, and overall, there’s not much holding this cabin back aside from a cracked field monitor display and a broken cupholder cover. We even retained the owner’s manual, and a set of eye-popping factory multicolored mats that supplement the interior aesthetic nicely!
Mechanical Overview
You can consider this Prado a 4Runner under the skin, and it’s just as reliable as the V6 models that have ticked over some half a million miles over the years. Ours is fresh off a recent service, and benefits from a brand new 12v battery to help this 3.4l churn over. It springs to life, and is fresh off an oil and filter service to boot. To shore up any unwanted leaks of lubricant, we installed new valve cover gaskets and half-moon seals, and new serpentine belts were installed to keep your accessories reliably driven. Bulletproof in operation, the 5VZ jets up to highway speeds with glee and it feeds power into a smooth shifting automatic gearbox. Distributing power to a full-time 4WD system, a center locker and low range are also handy for loose surfaces or steep mountain climbs. The stock suspension is in terrific shape, and we bolstered the factory power steering with new inner and outer tie rods. Disc brakes on all four corners keep stopping distances to a minimum, and we replaced the front brake pads and rotors to bolster your ABS system. The factory alloys are handsome, and the freshly installed Falken tires are the icing on the cake. Fresh off a four wheel alignment, you’ll track dead straight, and look good doing it!
