Exterior Overview
The Land Cruiser model is internationally known for its incredible capability, bulletproof reliability, and ability to withstand abuse. The 80 Series generation is particularly unstoppable, and this 1996 is one heck of a clean example. Boasting a brand new Ironman 4×4 lift, this Gray Opal Metallic (1A6) is adorned with a set of Rebel 16×8 alloys, OEM rain guards, OEM optional chrome mirror caps and door handles, privacy tint, and some stylish TYC tail lamps. Aside from a few light dings, chips, scuffs, and a right front fender replacement in Japan, the paint is in good shape and this turbodiesel model is fresh off a recent service. Offered with only 101k verified and documented miles on the clock, it’s barely broken in. Powerful, efficient, and spacious, these straight axle rigs make for killer year-round family haulers, decent dedicated overlanders, and cool campsite crawlers. Undeniably great, and particularly practical, this terrific Toyota is a bonafide Japanese Classic.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in above average condition and includes a few upgrades and optional equipment. The driver has tons of room to move about and sits high above traffic for better visibility. A tilt adjustable steering column allows the pilot to find the ideal seating position and a Nardi wood grain wheel feels premium in the palms of your hands. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and is in good shape. The center stack includes a simple-to-use automatic climate system that doles out piping-hot heat and cool aircon upon request. If natural ventilation is preferred, a large power sunroof can tilt or fully retract to provide a breeze. By the sunroof controls, the factory Field Monitor displays information about the outside conditions to those within the cabin. A touchscreen Panasonic head unit looks modern and fills the cabin with tunes to supplement the inline 6 soundtrack. For those who plan to daily drive, power windows, power locks, and power mirrors all work in typical Toyota fashion. The seats are almost mint and lack any major rips, stains, or tears. The material is mirrored in the door cards, too, which have held up well over the years. The headliner and carpets have resisted major abuse, and as a whole, it is hard to remember a better quality 80 series interior. Aside from a nonfunctional power folding driver mirror, we can’t complain about much. Even a spare key and the owner’s manuals are included with the purchase.
Mechanical Overview
These body-on-frame, straight-axle beasts harken back to a different time. The 1HD-FT engine is legendary too, and ours is fresh off an oil and filter service. A new engine air filter and new fuel filter were installed as soon as it got on the lift, and we also installed two new 12v batteries which ensures you won’t be left stranded on a cold morning. To keep the electronics properly powered we also replaced the accessory belts while it was on the lift. The 4.2L feels hearty as a horse and one of our trained techs replaced the valve cover gasket with a new one so the oil level stays on full. Linked to a stout automatic gearbox, this Landy gets up to highway speeds with confidence and is a good freeway cruiser. The Full-Time 4WD system has a low range and center locker if an off-road escape is in order and the straight axles are a big draw for the enthusiast crowd. The suspension was upgraded, and one of our technicians swapped out the old shocks and springs with a brand-new Ironman 4×4 lift. We also replaced the sway bar bushings for state inspection and this 80 rides like a dream. The brakes can slow this massive rig down quickly and grip is handled by four new 33″ Falken all-terrain tires. Freshly aligned, the new rubber will last for a long time to come. The power-assisted steering is easy to articulate and this truck tracks straight as an arrow, and benfits from a new steering damper. Collectible, capable, and reliable trucks like this are getting harder to find by the day, but this one is retail-ready to go!
