Exterior Overview
The N180 generation Hilux Surf is a sales leader. It is handsome, frugal, performance-oriented, and affordable. This 1996 is also reliable, with its nearly bulletproof turbodiesel driveline. Fresh off a recent service, this SSR-G is offered with only 124k verified and documented miles on the clock. Finished in a lovely Azure Blue (8L6), this rig is set off by an aggressive OEM rear spoiler, OEM rainguards, and five matching silver Bigway 16″ wheels wrapped in new 31″ Falken rubber. Aside from a few light scuffs, chips, and scrapes this trusty Toyota is in good shape aesthetically and turns plenty of heads. Easy to service, and inexpensive to modify these Hilux SUVs make for safe year-round kid haulers, fun weekend warriors, and boss beach cruisers. Collectible and cool, Japanese Classics normally aren’t this practical and typically break the bank. Accessible to all and fun to drive, this could be the perfect midsize sports utility!
Interior Overview
The interior design is simple, and this Surf is nicely optioned, too. Toyota thought of everything, even down to a power rear under mirror that deploys from the spoiler, acting as a primitive backup camera. Dual airbags are standard as are anti-lock brakes, for those who place an importance on safety. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support to find the ideal driving position. Power windows, power locks, electric mirrors, and a motorized rear window all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The OEM TV/radio works too, filling the cabin with soothing tunes. For the last few days of winter, the heat will keep those within the cockpit warm and we have tested the air conditioning for next summer. The seats are trimmed in a durable Gray Moon Mist cloth. The upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The rear row can split fold and tumble forward to create a flat loading floor. The headliner is in good shape, as are the door cards and headliner. Even the OEM carpet mats are included in the sale! Aside from some repaired dashboard damage, this cockpit is pretty clean and we think the new American owner will agree!
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this brute is underpinned by a true body on frame chassis. The engine is also a beast, the legendary 1KZ-TE. This four-banger is fresh off an oil and filter service and churns to life care of two new 12v batteries. A new fuel filter is always fitted on our diesels and we also refreshed the 3.0L with a new valve cover gasket and half-moon seal. The four-banger is linked to a stout automatic gearbox that shifts like a champ. For the best acceleration and fuel economy, this Surf can be driven with the rear wheels only. When the going gets tough and traction is low, a center locker and high-range 4WD can be engaged. For the worst road conditions, a low range is on hand, too. The Hilux gets up to highway speeds quickly and cruises effortlessly. The long wheelbase distributes bumps well, and new front lower control arms, and front and rear sway bar links were replaced while it was on the lift. The ABS brakes are responsive, and new front pads and rotors were taken care of while it was up on the lift. The Bigway wheels are wrapped in new Falken all-terrain rubber. The new tires reduce road, look great, and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
