Exterior Overview
The Celsior was a pillar of modern luxury automotive design, and for a chassis that debuted in the late eighties, Toyota really knew how to create something ahead of its time. We argue that Toyota perfected the chassis in 1997, with the debut of this facelifted UCF21, and with examples like this it’s easy to see why. This Type C is a darling Celsior, finished in Alpine silver metallic (199) and showing no defects apart from some minor dings, chips and swirls from day to day use. It also boasts only 58k verified and documented miles, which does a lot to back up its condition. Fresh off a comprehensive service here at the shop, including an expensive timing belt and water pump job, this luxury saloon is turn-key ready to ace your day to day commute. Clean, comfortable, and cherished by all, this Japanese Classic stands the test of time and can’t be killed!
Interior Overview
The interior is in terrific condition for a 25 year old vehicle. Cabin entry is made more seamless by functional keyless entry. Unlike their US counterparts, executive wool was the popular choice in Japan, and luckily the durable grey upholstery has remained in great shape over the years. The dash shows well, too with no cracks, peeling, or sun damage to be found. The complementary woodgrain trim is spiffy and houses a trick factory touchscreen that integrates dual-zone climate control with premium OEM audio. As you’d expect, this quiet cabin doles out cold A/C and hot heat at a moment’s notice, but all four windows are automatic and unfurl rapidly if you want to let in the sights and smells of the outdoors. The driver benefits from some added accessibility in the cabin. Four way power seats and a power tilt and telescoping wheel allow you to dial in the perfect driving position and dual front and side SRS airbags provide for some additional safety for all occupants. A chauffeur’s vehicle at heart, the Celsior certainly doesn’t skimp on power amenities. Power seatbelt adjusters, power locks, and even power folding “sonic” side mirrors all work at the push of a button. This UCF21 even features factory remote start that’s surprisingly responsive and intuitive to operate. The rear seats are spacious and rear passengers even get their own set of climate control vents and a multipurpose storage compartment in the center armrest. The headliner is tight and taut, and with the inclusion of the original carpeted floor mats, first aid kit, tool kit, owner’s manual, and maintenance booklet, this Celsior should satisfy its stateside owner just fine.
Mechanical Overview
The 1UZ-FE under the bonnet is an engineering marvel, and far more than just an urban legend for its infamous “champagne glass test”. For 1997, Toyota kicked things into gear, bolstering this 4.0 V8 with VVT-i technology, and from a performance standpoint, this luxury mill really impresses! Our trained technicians got this one under the knife for a full service, where a new 12v battery was installed to aid ignition. We also performed an oil and filter service to get some fresh lubricant flowing before tearing down the timing components. A new timing belt, water pump, and thermostat were installed and should keep you covered for the next 10 years or 100,000 kilometers. We also dropped in a new engine air filter before its first road test, and with the maintenance performed this Celsior is a treat to drive overall. Equipped with a redesigned 5 speed auto, this UCF21 is civil around town or cruising at interstate speeds and power is sent rearward without a hitch. Factory air suspension is functional and in good working order, and for some additional suspension rehab, both front caster arm bushings were installed to pass state safety inspection. The power steering is feather light for a big boat and easy to articulate. The brakes do a great job at slowing this Celsior down, and ABS is standard if you find yourself in inclement weather. Lastly, we installed fresh rubber at all four corners. Road noise is kept to a minimum, and you’ll be covered for tens of thousands of miles of luxury cruising!
