Toyota was building world-class SUVs by the late 1990s and the Hilux Surf was a volume leader. You can see why, with its determined capability, steadfast reliability, numerous standard safety systems, and classic styling. This Stellar Blue (8L7) 1996 model would make for a delightful daily driver, useful kid hauler, or wonderful weekend playtoy. This rig is subtly set off by OEM rainguards and a refinished set of 16x7 ET27 aftermarket alloy wheels, and is quite a handsome little truck. Aside from a few light dings, chips, and scuffs the cosmetics are in good shape and this SSR-X is fresh off a recent service. Boasting a mere 80k verified and documented miles, this Surf is powered by the same engine sold here stateside in our beloved 4Runners, which makes parts and services as convenient as it can get. Collectible, cool, and designed to stand the test of time, this terrific Toyota is a certified Japanese Classic.
The cabin has plenty of room for five, some decent appointments, and decent ergonomics. The driver has a clear view of the road ahead thanks to this Hilux's tall ride height and the dashboard lacks any cracking or fading. A neat, modern Pioneer head unit pumps in the tunes, and directly above is functional automatic heat and A/C. Dual SRS airbags are standard for those who are safety conscious, as in the Surf's antilock braking system. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support so that they may find the optimal driving position. Power windows, door locks, and electric mirrors are standard, too. Even the rear glass powers down to let in a light breeze. The seats are upholstered in Moon Mist colored cloth. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and are in fine shape. The middle row can split-fold or fold flat depending on your cargo accommodations. The headliner and door cards are in good nick and aside from some light staining on the carpets and nonfunctional rear heat, it's pretty hard to complain about this 25-year-old cabin. Even the owner's manual is still on hand, and it's clear this car was cared for in a prior life in Japan.
The 3RZ-FE powering this Surf is the same as what's found in our stateside units and is a joy to drive! The 2.7L is fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly care of a new 12v battery. A new fuel filter aids its seamless operation and one of our trained technicians also replaced the valve cover gasket with a new one. New accessory belts were thrown in for good measure and the four-banger feels healthy as all get up! The four-cylinder is linked to a slick-shifting automatic gearbox. Power can be sent on demand to two or four wheels depending on the driver's preference. If an off-road excursion is in order, a low-range 4WD setting can be engaged as well. Acceleration is more than enough to merge safely on the interstate, and cruise at sustained speeds. To be frank, it's nearly as fast as its V6 stablemate! The suspension is predictable and sorts out pavement imperfections with ease. The brakes are tight and tidy thanks to new front pads and new 31" Falken tires have been mounted and balanced at all four corners so that this Surf is good to go. The power steering is light yet on point and takes you in whichever direction you point this lovely ute! Ideal as daily drivers, weekend cruisers, and winter warriors these Surfs are down to take a licking and keep on ticking!
