There's a lot to love about Toyota's second generation Hilux Surf. It's built on a rugged, reliable body on frame platform, is timelessly styled, and it's even underpinned by a trusty turbodiesel drivetrain we never saw in the states. This 1995 is a fine example, racking up a mere 111k verified and documented miles over the years. Finished in Dark Blue Pearl (8E3) the exterior turns heads to those in the know, and stands out thanks to a factory rear spoiler and prominent OEM rainguards all the way around. Rolling on factory refinished alloys clad in fresh Falken rubber, this one is turn-key ready for daily drives or weekend trips to the trails. Suitable for just about anything you throw at it, these dependable Surfs are nothing less than true Japanese Classics and the Recaro interior is just a bonus on this fine example!
The interior is designed with utility in mind and features enough power equipment and amenities to make daily driving a breeze, even in this classic chassis. The desirable factory Recaro interior is in good nick, and the seats are well bolstered and coddle drivers of all shapes and sizes. We did want to note the driver's bucket has succumbed to typical bolster wear and repairs, but the remainder of the materials show well and the headliner, carpet, and rear bench leave little to be desired. The dash is trimmed in a complementary grey vinyl. While these dashboards are notorious for sun fading, cracking and other distortion, this one has escaped the past 25 years without a scratch, and the remaining materials are in above average condition to boot. Nestled in the lower dash trim, Kenwood audio works like a charm with MP3 functionality should you choose to rock out to your own soundtrack on a commute. Cold A/C works like a charm for the blazing hot summer months, and if you ever traverse your way through a blizzard or two, hot heat is on standby if needed. Aiding driver comfort, a tilt adjustable steering column and MOMO woodgrain wheel work in tandem and add a touch of class to this otherwise utilitarian interior. All power windows go up and down smoothly, including the power rear glass which is a godsend for anyone looking to haul a few furry friends around. Additional power equipment includes electric locks, mirrors, and a power moonroof which works like a charm. The rear bench is finished in complementary Recaro upholstery and folds fully forward if you need to maximize cargo space in the rear. All in all for a cabin that's withstood the better part of two decades there's little to complain about outside of some wear on the touch points. We've even retained the original owner's manual, and the keyless entry works like new!
The 1KZ-TE has a lot going for it under the hood. It's by far the most desirable, dependable, and powerful engine option in the chassis, and ours has the added benefit of a comprehensive service done in house by our trained technicians. She starts up promptly and settles into a smooth idle care of a fresh oil and filter service. Additionally aiding smooth operation, a fresh engine air filter and fuel filter were installed to keep this four banger protected against unwanted contaminants. New serpentine belts drive your accessories reliably, and a new valve cover gasket was installed up top to keep any lubricant from sneaking its way out. With the maintenance performed she gets right up to speed and the automatic transmission is engineered for ease of use, cruising comfortably even at higher speeds. For those in harsh climates or those looking to go off the grid, the transfer case can drop into 4WD when needed with low gearing on hand should you choose to go crawling. The suspension feels poised over road imperfections large and small, and the brakes do a fine job at halting this midsize SUV thanks to fresh pads up front. Brand new Falken rubber puts the power down reliably on any surface and you should be covered for tens of thousands of miles of uninterrupted fun!
