Toyota's 70 series Cruiser is a stout and durable body on frame SUV that features battle proven design, bulletproof mechanicals, and a steadfast reputation across the globe. Our 1994 Prado SX is a mighty good one, finished in a one-off Lucille Black. The exterior shows well overall and is accented by OEM rainguards, LED tail lamps, privacy tint, and a slick set of gunmetal 5 spoke alloy wheels wrapped in meaty Falkens. While the exterior shows some expected defects from day to day use over the years, it's stood the test of time quite well. As good as it looks, this Cruiser drives even better, which should come as no surprise given the 138k miles on the clock are verified and documented. It's easy to see why these unique, spacious, rugged, turbo diesel terrors are some of the most definitive Japanese Classic SUV's we have to offer.
For those looking to pilot this rig around for daily use, the cabin is well appointed and was clearly cared for quite well by its previous owner. The patterned cloth upholstery on the seats has been protected by a stylish set of leather seat covers, which add a touch of class and comfort to this neo-classic Cruiser. Even the vinyl on the dash has resisted any major wear and tear over the years, and the remaining materials show well, from the taut fabric on the headliner to the plush terry carpet underneath. For such a classic cabin, enthusiasts will be glad to see Eclipse audio and fully functional climate control are on hand to add a touch of modernity to the cockpit. The sound quality is decent, and for a summer cruiser, the A/C blows frigid and is easy to switch on and off. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column, and some additional electric lumbar support for added comfort behind the wheel. These J78's make for sufficient haulers as well. The rear bench comfortably seats three additional passengers with ample head and legroom, and the assembly can fold fully forward if extra cargo space is needed in the rear. There's even a sought after factory third row option that can deploy from the rear d-pillars with ease. Power windows, mirrors, and locks work like a charm, and overall, it's hard to complain about the condition of this tried and true cabin. Save for some small cracks on the driver's door panel it isn't too worse for the wear, and we've retained the factory owner's manual to further protect your investment!
Under the bonnet, Toyota's 1KZ-TE stands loud and proud. A punchy 3.0 turbo diesel four banger, we often champion these powerplants for turning half a million miles with ease, and this particular unit has undergone service by our trained technicians to be a fine candidate for the road ahead. A new 12v battery aids ignition, and this one cranks over without any unwanted squeals or squeaks thanks to new serpentine belts across the board. A new engine air filter and fuel filter provide a bit of a tune up while also protecting against unwanted contaminants, and oil from the fresh oil and filter service stays sealed up tight thanks to a new valve cover gasket installed up top. With the maintenance performed, this one rides like a dream for such a primitive SUV design. The turbo delivers sufficient oomph down low and this one can easily hold its own at highway speeds if needed. Shifts through the automatic gearbox are smooth, and the 4WD transfercase is easy to access if you want to traverse this one through the trails. 4WD low is at the ready as well should you need to escape any sticky situations. The struts glide over bumps with minimal effort, the brakes clamp down hard, and we've replaced the swaybar endlinks in the rear to dial in the handling a bit. Last up on the list, we wrapped the alloys in fresh All-Terrain Falken rubber. Not only do the tires suit the all-terrain aesthetic perfectly, they'll deliver plenty of grip and we've had a four wheel alignment performed to ensure smooth and straight driving for tens of thousands of miles to come!
