With a deceptively spacious interior, bulletproof turbodiesel drivetrain, and fan-favorite styling, what's not to love about this 1998 HiAce Super Custom? Finished in Evergreen Pearl (751) this cabover is quite the looker, and stands out a bit from the typical brown and beige color scheme vans you typically see on the road. Save for some expected scuffs, chips, and dings along the body, and some condensation in the turn signal housings, the exterior shows well overall and is accented by OEM rainguards, a complementary graphics package, and a set of aftermarket 16" gunmetal alloys. Sporting 129k verified miles on the clock, this Hiace has plenty of life left on the bulletproof drivetrain, and is well equipped to haul whatever or whomever you need for the road ahead. Comfortable, capable, and lovable all around, this HiAce is quite the Japanese Classic.
The interior of this Hiace is a true swiss army knife, offering up plenty of comfort, utility, and functionality for whoever gets behind the wheel. This particular cabin is in above average shape and is trimmed in a complementary teal cloth. Adding to the versatility of the interior is a swiveling middle row, which also assumes a 60/40 split, and a rear bench that folds flat in tandem with the other seating in case you or your passengers need to catch some shut eye. While there are some minor rips and holes on the lone middle seat, the rest of the materials show well, from the headliner to the carpets underneath. Up front, the dash lies low and aids the cabover design's visibility. The dash materials are in good nick and have withstood the harsh rays of the sun without succumbing to any unwanted fading or distortion. In the center stack, Clarion audio works like a charm and lies adjacent to an easy to use dual zone climate control system. All 8 passengers can enjoy Cold A/C throughout the cabin, and hot heat isn't too far behind if needed. Both driver and passenger benefit from dual SRS airbags up front, and the driver additionally gains a tilt adjustable steering column to get things just right. Power windows, locks, and power folding mirrors work as advertised, and we even retained the factory owner's manual to help preserve the history of this classic van. If you can see past some damage to the center console lid, this one should serve the next owner well for it's new life overseas.
Power is delivered via Toyota's robust 1KZ-TE mounted midship. This punchy turbodiesel has a staunch reputation for being one of the brand's best powerplants for commuter trucks and vans, and ours is fresh off a recent service, ready for the road ahead. First, our trained technicians installed a new 12v battery to ensure you'll never be left stranded. A fresh oil and filter service was performed, and a new valve cover gasket was installed up top to keep any unwanted lubricant from leaking out of the head. We replaced the diesel fuel filter, and this one now gets up to highway speeds reliably. The turbo offers a formidable oomph down low, and the automatic transmission does a fine job at transferring power to the rear wheels while still being geared appropriately for higher speed highway drives, should a longer road trip be in the cards. New upper control arms in the front dial in the handling a touch, and the suspension is soft and compliant overall, even on rougher terrain. The ABS brakes do a swell job at stopping this van on a dime, and the alloys are even wrapped in fresh all season rubber, sure to deliver plenty of grip whenever and wherever you need it most!
