Toyota's macho four-door Hilux in an imposing midsize truck if there ever was one. This nearly bulletproof 1994 is a wonderful example, finished in a classic Blue Gray Metallic (179), and offered with only 149k verified and documented miles. The aftermarket alloys, new bedliner, color-matched roll bar, and OEM rainguards subtly set off the all-business aesthetic. Aside from the normal light dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal use, the paint is in good nick. Enthusiasts likely won't care that she's a showstopper at the local Cars and Coffee, but instead will value the trusty diesel engine, rear differential locker, and rugged 4x4 system. As a practical, collectible, and rare Toyota this top-tier Hilux ticks all the boxes and is a certified Japanese Classic.

The cabin is much more spacious than American examples of the truck for obvious reasons. The double cab configuration delivers plenty of legroom for front and rear occupants. The view of the road is clear and commanding, and the dash is in good nick aside from a blemish in the center that was covered with a cell phone mat. Everything is at hand and this pickup has a surprising amount of amenities. It is actually equipped with a large sunroof that can be tilted up for added ventilation. A tilt column, and electric windows and mirrors work as advertised. It even has A/C for the summertime and a set of cup holders. A MoMo steering wheel and Eclipse audio system are great upgrades to have on hand and set the cabin apart from your average Hilux. The gray upholstery is in good nick and lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have withstood the past quarter-century without sustaining major damage. That's not to say the cabin is perfect, as it's missing a center console, but with the gear lever so close it's not the worst thing in the world. It's obvious the truck was cared for in a prior life and we even have the Japanese owner's manual!

Under the muscular bodylines is a tried and true diesel 2.8L engine. Fresh off an oil and filter service the four-banger springs to life with a twist of the key. Two new 12v batteries and a fresh oil and filter service were just taken care of, and one of our trained techs installed a new set of serpentine belts while it was on the lift. The 2800cc mill is mated to a manual gearbox, which makes the most of what horsepower you have. The gearbox shifts properly and makes driving it much more fun and involved. The selective transfer case allows the driver to choose between two and four-wheel drive. The truck crowd will be pleased to know this example is equipped with the optional rear diff-locker, which we hardly ever come across. If you plan to daily drive, this Hilux is civil on pavement. It is geared such that sustained highway use is not a problem and it has plenty of torque for city use. We replaced all the Toyota's tie rods with new ones to give the suspension a refresh and the brakes and steering feel confident. Lastly, the aftermarket alloys were wrapped in new all-terrain Falkens before she headed off to state inspection.

For those who love classic Toyota pickups, it's hard not to appreciate this little truck. Likely to outlast a new Tundra this vintage is only going to go up in value and wont last long!
