The Hilux Surf is an incredibly well-built and modern driving midsize SUV. We see plenty that come through the dealership, but this 1996 is a bit more special. Offered with a mere 60k verified and documented miles, this Desert Dune Metallic (1A5) example includes the rare and desirable factory optional Recaro interior and tons of power equipment, too. The body is in good shape aside from some light dings and chips associated with normal use. Accessorized with OEM raingaurds, and a set of 17" refinished Rays Daytona alloys, this SSR-G is as striking as it is capable and reliable. If you desire to own a clean overlander, civil daily driver, or weekend cruiser this VZN185 might just be the perfect Japanese Classic.

The cabin is spacious, ergonomic, safe, and quiet. It's really hard to complain about this truck's condition, and the level of equipment is astounding for the mid '90s. The dash lacks any cracking, and visibility out the front windscreen is clean and unobstructed. For the first time ever in a Surf, dual SRS airbags were made as standard equipment. They add a level of reassurance for those with precious cargo, although we hope you never have to use them. A JVC headunit replaces the dated factory one, and it works like a charm. It even has an auxiliary input and the sound clarity is decent. The driver benefits from an adjustable steering column and manual lumbar support for ultimate comfort. One of the most ingenious features was a powered reverse mirror. With the press of a button, the driver can unfurl a mirror from the rear spoiler to view the parking situation behind this rig. Electric windows, locks, and power-folding mirrors all work as advertised and make daily use convenient. An optional power sunroof that adds lots of natural light to the cabin can be either tilted up or retracted for additional natural ventilation. An automatic climate control system is close by and blows cold A/C for summer and pipes in hot heat for the colder months ahead. The star of the show is the Recaro seats and they are in above average condition. They lack any major rips, stains, or tears and keep you from sloshing around during spirited driving. The headliner, door cards, and carpets have all resisted major abuse over the years and the cabin shows better than trucks 1/3 of its age. That's not to say it's perfect, as we did want to note the field monitor is no longer working.

The mechanicals are every bit as good as the interior. These trucks have tons of aftermarket parts support, and this 3.4L V6 was the top-of-the-line engine offered stateside. It's fresh off an oil and filter service and starts up promptly thanks to a new 12v battery. For those who care about proper preventative maintenance, you'll be happy to hear about the brand new timing belt and water pump that were installed by our trained technicians. It's the most expensive service for the truck and will save the next owner a good deal of cash and deliver some additional peace of mind. The truck idles with confidence and power is fed through an automatic gearbox. The transmission shifts seamlessly and the driver can select 2WD or 4WD depending on their preference, and unlike US versions, a center locking differential can be engaged, too. That feature alone allows this tank to sail over sandy terrain and loose surfaces with ease. The TEMS adjustable suspension is compliant and predictable and has hard and soft ride settings. The brakes inspire confidence and the power steering is of average weight, on point, and as communicative as a truck will get. The 17" Rays wheels are all wrapped in new Falken 31" all-terrain rubber. They look imposing and tough and will last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
