Exterior Overview
The folks at Toyota saw that the bB was a killer little hatch, and they sought to increase its appeal even more with the arrival of the Open Deck. This trucklet had room for five, a modular bed, and the same reliable mechanicals we have come to love from this legendary Japanese brand. Our 2001 example is finished in a sleek Black Sand over White (209) two-tone, and is set off by OEM turbine-style wheels and a set of subtle OEM rainguards. Aside from some minor dings, chips, and scuffs, the paint is in fine shape, and this happy little hauler is fresh off a recent service. Offered with only 121k verified and documented miles on the clock, this terrific Toyota has loads of life left in it! Practical, unique, and efficient, this Japanese Classic would make for a fun frugal family ferry, wild weekend cruiser, or magical marketing machine.
Interior Overview
The cabin is in good shape and comes well-equipped. Access inside is made more seamless with functional keyless entry. The driver benefits from a tilt-adjustable steering column to find the ideal seating position, and power locks, power folding mirrors, and windows all work in typical Toyota fashion, making daily use more enjoyable. The center stack includes a simple to use climate control system that doles out piping hot heat or cold A/C depending on your preference. Above, a brand new USDM Boss audio system features american radio frequencies and Bluetooth integration. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading, and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The seats are trimmed in a soft tan cloth. Aside from some dye transfer and a few minor imperfections on the driver’s bolster the seats are in good shape, and there is room for five adults. Access to the rear seats is made easier with a passenger-side rear-hinged door. The headliner is in good shape, and the carpets and door cards have withstood the past 25 years without sustaining major abuse. The highlight of the cabin has to be the truck-style tailgate. The rear windows tilt upward, with a large access panel that drops down, and suddenly, you have unlimited cargo space. It’s quite the sight to behold!
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this Toyota is nearly the same as our Scion xBs. That means parts sourcing, maintenance, and repairs are as easy as pie. Power comes from the venerable 1NZ-FE. Fresh off an oil and filter service, this Open Deck starts up with a new 12v battery. To ensure the oil level stays full, one of our trained technicians replaced the leaky old valve cover gasket with a new one. The 1.5L is linked to an automatic transmission that feeds power to the front wheels. It shifts properly and should stay that way thanks to a fresh transmission fluid exchange. It gets up to highway merging speeds without breaking a sweat and slows down promptly, as we replaced the passenger front brake caliper, front brake pads, and front brake rotors. It rides great, as we have heavily refreshed the suspension, too. New shocks all around isolate road imperfections, and new front sway bar links, front lower control arms, and trailing arm bushings were added before it passed the VA state safety inspection. The power steering is easy to manipulate, and grip comes from four brand new tires we mounted and balanced here at the shop. Fun to maneuver, the bB tracks straight as an arrow thanks to a fresh alignment. Turn key and ready to rock, this unique, useful, and trusty runabout can be yours today!
