Exterior Overview
Toyota’s SUVs are legendary, and this 2000 Surf is no exception. It’s inexpensive to service, efficient, reliable, and capable. It also touts beloved styling with its classic lines and White Pearl (057) paint. Set off by an OEM rear spoiler, OEM spare tire swingarm, EGR rainguards and OEM refinished 16″ alloys, the body is in good shape aside from some light dings, chips, and scuffs associated with normal use. Fresh off a recent service, this SSR-X is offered with a mere 92k verified and documented miles on the clock. Powered by the same engine as we received here in our domestic 4Runner models, maintenance items are readily available, and modifications can be had on the cheap. Durable enough to be a daily driver, and tenacious enough to tear up some trails, this Japanese Classic has some serious staying power!
Interior Overview
This cabin has a bit more flair than our average run of the mill Surf. It boasts a rare OEM color changing instrument panel, custom leather and suede bucket seats and faux woodgrain accent trim for a little extra panache. We also replaced the tired Japanese audio with a Boss USDM head unit, that includes integrated Bluetooth handsfree tech. The dashboard lacks any cracking or fading and dual SRS airbags are standard equipment. The center stack is accessible to both front occupants and the digital automatic climate control is intuitive to operate. The A/C is cold, the heat is hot, and if you prefer more natural ventilation, the rear hatch glass can retract and electric windows are on standby. Power locks and power mirrors are functional making daily use more enjoyable and pilots of all sizes can find the ideal seating position courtesy of a tilt-adjustable steering column and adjustable lumbar support. The headliner, carpets and door cards are in fine shape and the upholstery lacks any major rips, stains, or tears. Aside from the power folding function of the side mirrors giving up the ghost, it’s hard to complain about the cabin, and the subtle updates are quite impressive.
Mechanical Overview
The 3RZ-FE is a wonderful mill, and the fact that there is no timing belt to change is an added benefit for those who are long-term owners. Fresh off an oil and filter service, the 2.7L churns to life with the twist of the key. A new 12v battery aids ignition, and we have installed a new engine air filter to maximize power and efficiency. To ensure the oil level stays full, one of our trained techs has resealed the oil pump. The four-banger feels healthy as a horse and is connected to a stout automatic transmission. It shifts properly and the driver can select between 2WD and 4WD on the fly. For off-road excursions, a low range and center locking differential can be engaged, improving traction over loose surfaces. The Hilux gets up to highway speeds without breaking a sweat and slows down with confidence. ABS is standard for those living in winter climates and all the components interchange with the 4Runner. We refreshed the suspension a fair amount! New front lower ball joints, front sway bar links, front lower control arms, and rear upper control arms have all been replaced. The ride quality is above average, and we completely overhauled the steering system. The rack was rebuilt, new fluid flushed in and new boots and bushings installed. We also added in new inner and outer tie rods so we could easily align this Hilux. We then wrapped the OEM wheels in new 31″ tires. The new rubber looks great, quells road noise, and should last for tens of thousands of miles to come.
