Exterior Overview
A vast departure from the 80 series chassis that preceded it, it’s clear Toyota’s goal with the 100 series was to lay the framework for every modern luxury SUV, and create a stylish, serviceable, and timeless classic. With a punchy V8 powerplant, a full slate of luxurious amenities, and lovable, curvaceous styling, it’s safe to say the brand delivered tenfold. Finished in White Pearl (057) our 2001 VX Limited G Selection is a looker, set off by an OEM spare tire swingarm, optional chrome hardshell tire cover, a factory rear spoiler, OEM rainguards, and stylish Method off-road wheels. Save for some paint imperfections and a couple minor dings, the luxurious aesthetic is mostly unhampered, and stateside Land Cruiser enthusiasts will value the 75k verified and documented miles on the clock above all else. Ideal for a road trip, or a trek through the trails, Japanese Classics like these always prevail!
Interior Overview
The G selection was the top of the line Land Cruiser trim, fashioned with factory leather upholstery and oodles of power amenities. It doesn’t take much to realize this cockpit was well cared for in a prior life, as the upholstery is all tight and tidy and shows well apart from some typical stress cracks. The condition extends throughout the leather inserts on the door cards, all the way to the middle bench and optional third row seating. The dash is clean too, and houses dual SRS airbags to ease any safety-conscious passengers. The driver can slot in nicely behind a factory woodgrain steering wheel, although the OEM tilt/telescope feature no longer functions. The center stack is intuitively designed, with OEM audio and functional dual zone climate control. Both front and rear passengers have their choice of cold A/C or piping hot heat, and a massive power moonroof can be unfurled if you need to let natural airflow permeate the cabin. Further assisting daily use, power windows, locks, and power mirrors all work like a charm. The seating arrangements are versatile. Both driver and passenger benefit from power, heated buckets, and the middle row reclines all the way for sleepy passengers. A third row bench can also rapidly deploy, which increases seating capacity to eight! Overall it’s easy to see why the 100 series’ interior has earned such a stellar reputation. It’s spacious, capable, and about the most comfortable SUV we’ve been able to import thus far. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect as there are a few light stains on the carpets and middle seat base. Still, those do little to take away from the cabin’s appeal, and we think the next owner is bound to agree.
Mechanical Overview
Under the skin, this Land Cruiser utilizes a tough chassis that can withstand nearly any major abuse. The same can be said for the 2UZ-FE under the hood, but it’s worth noting this V8 is plenty refined, too. Ours cranks over with haste, thanks to a newly installed 12v battery, and is fresh off a recent service here at the shop, where we started with an oil and filter change. A new engine air filter was also installed and then we flushed out the coolant with new juice. This luxury cruiser is comfortable, quiet, and composed on pavement, even at higher speeds. Power is sent straight to a legendary 4×4 system, where we performed a fluid flush on the transmission to keep gear changes smooth and predictable. Complete with a center locking differential and low range, this Landy can go anywhere, and get there comfortably, thanks to functional active height control suspension. We freshly greased the front wheel bearings as well as the driveshafts and U-Joints, and the 4WD works like a dream. Fully serviced to tackle stateside cruising, we replaced the front lower ball joints, front upper control arms, and front upper ball joints. The swaybar bushings and links were replaced up front as well to help this 100 ace state safety inspection. The power steering is feather light, and we serviced the brakes with new front pads and rotors. The Method wheels are wrapped in brand new 33″ Falken, and we aligned it on the rack here at the shop after the drivetrain maintenance to keep things tracking straight. Equipped with rare options, this Cruiser is chock full of style and substance, and is a perfect Japanese Classic SUV!
