Interior Overview
It’s rare that the interior of the J95 draws more attention than anything else, but with classy peanut butter faux leather seat covers, woodgrain accent trim, and three rows of spacious seating, this cabin does all the talking. Underneath the custom cowhides are optional OEM suede bucket seats that have resisted any serious wear and tear. The same can be said for the matching inserts in the door panels, as well as the headliner and carpets beneath. The center stack frames a modern Pioneer headunit, with Bluetooth compatibility and upgraded door speakers to blast your tunes throughout the cabin. Adjacent to the HVAC, automatic climate control works like a charm and is easy to use if you want to supply cabin with cold A/C and hot heat in both front and rear zones. If you prefer natural airflow, power windows and rear pop-out quarter glass can keep the upcoming crisp fall breeze on tap. To assist daily use, power locks and electric folding side mirrors are also handy. If you’d rather prioritize cargo over companionship, the third-row seats can stow off to the side, and the middle bench has the capability of folding completely forward. The driver can settle in behind a woodgrain steering wheel, and further dial in comfort with a tilt adjustable steering column and manual adjustable lumbar support. They can also monitor outside conditions with a factory field monitor. All in all, the cabin is in above-average shape, but that’s not to say it’s perfect. The power folding mirrors no longer operate, and there are a few minor spots of discoloration on the dash. For even the most discerning buyer, however, we think it’ll be really hard to scrutinize.
Mechanical Overview
Under the hood is Toyota’s prized 1KD-FTV turbodiesel. We’ve wrenched on quite a few of these direct-injected powerplants, and we think they earn high marks for efficiency, power, and overall ease of service. Taking care of a comprehensive check-in, our trained technicians have serviced this one for the road ahead, starting with a 2 new 12v batteries that were installed to properly test the alternator. After an oil and filter service, a new engine air filter and fuel filter were installed to maximize efficiency, and we’re quite impressed with the driving dynamics of these direct injected 3.0’s. Best of all, the injectors were serviced with all new seals and O-rings, which can be a time-consuming service. Midrange power and torque are improved tenfold, and a stout automatic gearbox helps send power rearward, or to all four wheels if the transfer case is engaged. For real off-road expeditions, a center locking differential and low range are handy, too. Comfortable over bumps, divots, and larger imperfections, the factory suspension benefits from new rear shocks, new rear upper and lower control arms, and new front lower control arms, with new lower ball joints installed for good measure. We also replaced the front swaybar links, which helped this Prado pass state safety inspection with flying colors. The power steering is light and easy to maneuver, and the ABS brakes stop on a dime with the assistance of new rear pads. The factory alloys are wrapped in fresh all-terrain rubber, and to make the most of the newly installed Falken tires, a fresh four-wheel alignment was performed to keep this Prado running tip top. This is a real enthusiast’s SUV, perfect for daily driving, campsite cruising, and everything in between!
