Exterior Overview
The Hilux Surf is our best selling model, and if we were to list all the reasons why, we’d run out of room on the page! This Japanese 4Runner is equal parts fun and functional, and is backed by a unique turbodiesel engine that’s reliable as all get out. After 30-something years of production, it’s safe to say the styling has aged well too, when you view examples like this 1999 SSR-G. Finished in a fresh coat of Apex Silver Metallic (A31), this super Surf is set off by an updated front fascia, scooped hood, and OEM rainguards. Save for a few minor blemishes, the cosmetics are in above-average shape overall, and the same can be said for the 125k miles on the clock, which are verified and documented. Boasting a few rare factory options, an easy ownership experience, and driving excitement that can’t be beat, this Surf has deserved its rightful spot in the hall of fame of Japanese Classics.
Interior Overview
The cabin rewards the driver with plenty of power switchgear, an optional Modellista interior, and an OEM MOMO woodgrain steering wheel that steals the show. Best of all, the upgraded wheel design retains the factory dual SRS airbag functionality, making the cabin a safe place for all. Upholstered in a durable tan cloth, the remaining interior materials show well, and lack any rips, major stains, or tears. Even the factory dash has resisted common peeling and distortion that typically pops up over the years. The center stack frames the functional digital automatic climate controls, which pump out cold A/C and hot heat into the cabin. It lies adjacent to an upgraded Pioneer head unit, which has MP3 functionality if you choose to hook up your phone. The headliner, door cards, and carpets are tidy, despite a few stains. Power windows, locks, and electric side mirrors assist daily use, and save for a hole on the shift boot and driver’s seat bottom, it’s really hard to nitpick this cabin’s condition overall. Even a factory optional air purifier is mounted atop the headliner!
Mechanical Overview
The 1KZ-TE has proven to be a stout unit for the six years we’ve been importing the platform, and this revised intercooled model is among the best of the bunch! Better yet, we’ve given this truck tons of great service, and the 3.0 turbodiesel cranks over quickly thanks to a new 12v battery. From there, an oil and filter service was performed, and we changed out the engine air filter and fuel filter to keep the 1KZ contaminant-free. It gets up to highway speeds in a jiffy, and we took extra care to make sure the suspension was serviced to keep on-road mannerisms safe and predictable. We installed new shocks all the way around, and installed new front lower control arms and lower ball joints for safety’s sake. The rear upper and lower control arms and front sway bar links were also replaced for good measure. For trips off the beaten path, this truck also features an optional center locking differential and low gearing if you become entrenched. We also refreshed the drivetrain with new front wheel bearings to keep unnecessary groans from permeating the cabin. The power steering is easy to maneuver, and benefits from new inner tie rods and a fresh four-wheel alignment. This Surf also stops on a dime, thanks to new rear brake shoes. The last line of defense between you and the pavement, new Falken all-terrain tires keep you covered on grip. Not to mention they look dang good on the refinished factory alloys too, and should deliver a comfortable ride for tens of thousands of miles to come!
