Exterior Overview
The Toyota Hilux Surf is a prolific model, and our best seller here at the dealership by a longshot. It’s easy to see why when you line this 2001 RZN185 up side by side with a USDM model. The 108k miles on the clock are verified and documented, this one-owner vehicle’s overall condition surpasses domestic models, and the drivetrain under the hood is shared with some of our USDM 4Runners. It’s a looker too, finished in Millennium Silver (K73), and set off by OEM rainguards, side steps, an optional spare tire swingarm, a front bumper protector, rear spoiler, and refinished factory alloy wheels. Save for a few paint blemishes and dings, the cosmetics are in good shape overall, and as a whole it’s clear this example was well cared for in a prior life. Boasting a frugal ownership experience, a dependable and easy to service drivetrain, and a slew of options to assist daily driving, there’s simply no other Japanese Classic like it!
Interior Overview
The interior is finished in a plush tan cloth, and for being 25 years young, we find the overall fit and finish incredible. The driver benefits from a tilt adjustable steering column, and additional lumbar adjustment to stay comfortable on longer hauls. The plush fabric seats are a welcome change over the more durable corduroy cloth that preceded it, and the upholstery shows no discernible rips, tears, or stains aside from some crushed foam on the driver’s bolster. The condition is in above average shape overall, and the same can be said for the carpets, which have been protected over the years by a set of snazzy factory floormats. The dash is tight and tidy as well, lacking major cracks, fading, or distortion. The center stack frames a redesigned digital automatic climate control display. Ripe with cold A/C, and hot heat for your front and rear passengers, it’s easy to use and ideal for seasonal climates. Adjacent to the HVAC, optional OEM audio works like a charm, although the display has given up the ghost. Power windows, side mirrors, and factory keyless entry are all in good working order. For outdoorsy types, you can unfurl the rear window to give your passengers a real open-air experience. The rear bench is versatile. Unlike our US market examples, this one has the option to slightly recline, and it can split-fold into a flat loading surface if you need more cargo space. The door cards have resisted the rigors of daily wear and tear to boot. That’s not to say this is a perfect cabin, as 25 years of use have yielded some wear to the steering wheel, and the climate control is missing a bulb for illumination. Still, the condition is in far above average shape, and we think the next owner is bound to agree.
Mechanical Overview
Simple, stout, and sturdy. The same can be true for the body-on-frame chassis, as well as the mechanicals powering it. The 3RZ-FE under the bonnet is prized for its ease of service, and our trained technicians have gone through this four banger to get you on track for the road ahead. It cranks over swiftly, and is fresh off an oil and filter service, to get you sorted for the next 5000 kilometers. We also installed a new oil pump seal, and a brand new heater control valve to help regulate the flow of coolant. This big four cylinder has enough power to move the Surf out of its own way, and power is thrown straight to an automatic gearbox. It distributes the torque amongst both rear wheels, and 4WD with a center locking differential is on hand should you venture off the beaten path. The factory suspension is comfortable and compliant, and we’ve performed one of the most necessary services on any old Toyota. The steering rack was fully rebuilt in house, with new seals, inner and outer tie rods, boots, and rack bushings. After installation, we flushed in new fluid, and threw this super Surf up on the rack for a four wheel alignment. The frame is in above average shape overall, and this N185 stops on a dime, thanks to brand new front brake pads and rotors. We wrapped the snazzy factory alloys in fresh Falken all-terrain rubber. It looks awesome, rides smooth, and should keep you gripped to the pavement for tens of thousands of miles to come!
