The 100 series was the first "luxury" Land Cruiser that Toyota offered, and the Cygnus model took that ethos to a whole new level!

Exterior Overview

The 100 series was the first “luxury” Land Cruiser that Toyota offered, and the Cygnus model took that ethos to a whole new level! Backed by a bulletproof V8 powerplant, handsome styling, and steadfast Toyota 4WD, this 2000 checks all the boxes, and would make for a brilliant daily driver. This example is considered to be barely broken in, touting just 79k verified and documented miles on the clock. Set off by a factory rear spoiler, OEM rainguards, LED tail lamps, and brand new Method alloys, this Cruiser is finished in a clean White Pearl (057) and looks great for its age. We wanted to note the hood and passenger fender were replaced in Japan, and a few rock chips, dings, and minor paint defects. Aside from that, the cosmetics are in good shape and would give most 2000’s USDM Toyotas a run for their money. Better yet, we’ve given this one a comprehensive recent service for a true turn-key experience. Excellent for a trip out in the sticks, and useful as a fantastic plush daily commuter to jet about and run errands, this Japanese Classic has some serious staying power!

Interior Overview

The interior is as premium as the Cygnus nameplate suggests, and is finished in a handsome tan leather. It doesn’t take much to realize this cockpit was well cared for in a prior life, as the upholstery is all tight and tidy and shows well apart from a defect on the rear bench. The condition extends throughout the leather inserts on the door cards, all the way to the optional third row seating. The dash is clean too, and houses dual SRS airbags to ease any safety-conscious passengers. The driver gains some extra pampering, as the steering column offers electronic tilt and telescoping adjustment. Making the cabin comfortable for all, an automatic climate control system is easy to operate and is linked to a factory touch screen display. Both front and rear passengers have their choice of cold A/C or piping hot heat, although the screen has gone dark over the years. For this reason, the climate system works best in auto. Plenty of additional power equipment is on hand to make your commute easy, too. Power windows, locks, and power mirrors all work like a charm, although the power folding feature no longer works. There’s even an expansive power moonroof to let in a view of the heavens above, and power pop-out side glass for natural ventilation. The seating arrangements are versatile. Both driver and passenger benefit from power buckets, and the middle row reclines all the way for sleepy passengers. If you need to prioritize cargo space, the third row stows snugly against the D-pillars. Overall it’s easy to see why the 100 series’ interior has earned such a stellar reputation. It’s spacious, capable, and about the most comfortable SUV we’ve been able to import thus far. That’s not to say the cabin is perfect. The woodgrain grips on the steering wheel are cracking, and the rear wiper is inoperable. Still, that does little to take away from the cabin’s appeal, and we think the next owner is bound to agree.

Mechanical Overview

Stateside shoppers rejoice, the 2UZ-FE under the hood is shared with domestic models like the Tundra and Land Cruiser, making servicing a walk in the park for the next owner. We’ve also given this one a healthy rehab here in the shop. The V8 churns over swiftly, care of a new 12v battery, and a new engine air filter and fuel filter eliminate contaminants and help the V8 settle into a smooth idle. We did want to note a small manifold leak that goes away once the V8 is warmed up. A new radiator and thermostat were installed to keep engine temps in check, and after the preliminary service it was ready for its first road test. These 2UZ’s have a reputation for outliving their owners, and this 4.7L runs like a top, accelerating smoothly through the powerband. Shifts are sent through an automatic gearbox into Toyota’s legendary full-time 4×4 system. A brand new Eibach lift sets the gold standard for upgraded ride quality, and gives this truck a tough presence off-pavement to boot. To shore up the drivetrain, we installed a new rear upper control arm to help this Cygnus pass state safety inspection with flying colors. The ABS brakes are nitrogen assisted and bite hard, and work in tandem with the fresh Falken rubber we installed on all four corners to deliver some impressive stopping power. The tires not only look mean, but are primed and ready to tackle whatever terrain you throw at this lovely rig. Fresh off a four-wheel alignment, this is a lovely cruiser that will be with you in Cygnus and in health!
