Exterior Overview
When the GD Impreza WRX arrived stateside in the early 2000’s, it shook up the scene. It bested all other sport compacts, and was as close to a road-going rally car as you could buy off the showroom floor. In Japan, this was no shocking revelation, as the original WRX rolled off production lines nearly 6 years prior. Completely redesigned for its second generation, this 2000 STi boasts lovable styling, some rare options and upgrades, and a driving experience second to none. Finished in Midnight Black Pearl, this super Subie is set off by an OEM optional aero kit. A factory front lip, side skirts, and a tasteful rear diffuser set this GDB apart from domestic models, and the factory gold Enkei alloys are in good shape. Save for some minor paint blemishes and chips, the exterior is in above-average shape overall, and we can also say the same for the 95k miles on the clock, which are verified and documented. We did want to note a prior replacement of the hood in Japan, which hasn’t altered this GD’s curb appeal one bit. Seasoned Subaru vets are enthralled with the high revving flat-four under the hood, and performance enthusiasts love the driver-centric cockpit. This Impreza STi has something for everyone, and this year, it’s been one of the best Japanese Classics we can get our hands on!
Interior Overview
This chassis seems to get everything right, but the interior design is a real standout. It’s fashioned in a trademark STi Blue Alcantara, yet it’s leagues better than USDM cabins that appear similar. The seats are thickly bolstered top to bottom, and keep both forward occupants snugly planted around twists and turns. The material on this example is in above average shape, and is mirrored in the door cards too. The driver can settle in behind an OEM MOMO steering wheel, and tilt the column to dial in additional comfort. The center stack is simple in design and not overcomplicated. It features easy to use automatic climate control, and a factory audio system that works as intended. Cold A/C and hot heat are on tap, to benefit this seasonal sedan. Adjustable Xenon headlamps help illuminate the road ahead in all conditions, and a rear windshield wiper was factory equipment on JDM models. Power windows, locks, and mirrors work like a charm, and the latter electronically fold if you need to squeeze into a tight parking spot. The headliner is clean, save for a few blemishes, and the carpets have been protected by factory mats. Even dual SRS airbags came standard, sure to ease the concerns of any particular passengers!
Mechanical Overview
After undergoing a full redesign, the Impreza was ready for the new millennium. The chassis was more rigid, and a host of driveline upgrades were performed. The EJ207 engine gained variable valve timing, forged internals, and a blistering 8,000 RPM redline. Ours is fresh off a recent service, and we took care of the most beneficial maintenance item by addressing a new timing belt and water pump. A new 12v battery was installed to aid ignition, and we also dropped in a new alternator to keep it properly charged. While we were in there, we also installed new valve cover gaskets and spark plugs on both sides. This boxer four sounds killer through an Apexi catback exhaust, and this rally rocket jets up to and above highway speeds with haste. The 6 speed manual gearbox is durable as all getout, and Subaru’s symmetrical AWD puts power to the ground to deliver loads of all-weather grip. Sure, the STi is quick on it’s feet, but it’s easy to stop too, thanks to factory Brembo brakes. New adjustable coilovers were installed to dial in the handling and aesthetics, and we replaced both steering rack boots to dial in your power steering. The factory gold alloys are wrapped in all new rubber, and we freshly aligned this Subie to make sure you track straight from the moment you leave the lot!
